Overview
Wen Shen is an associate professor of clinical gynecology and an associate professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics as well as joint appointmetns in the Kimmel Oncology Center and the Department of General Internal Medicine. She is also the clinical director of the Menopause Consultation service and the director of the Women’s Wellness & Healthy Aging Program. Dr. Shen has concentrated on menopause medicine for more than 20 years. She specializes in treating peri-menopause and menopausal symptoms taking into consideration the woman’s overall health. She often works with her patients’ primary care provider to recommend non-hormonal therapies, alternative treatment options and menopause hormone therapy as appropriate for the individual patient. In addition to clinical care, Dr. Shen focuses on educating her patients, other physicians and future physicians on women’s post reproductive health. She is actively developing curricula and educational aids for future physicians and health care providers on menopause medicine and the importance of healthy aging. Dr. Shen has published numerous articles and book chapters on menopause and perimenopause. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and had served on the Board of Trustees for the North American Menopause Society. Dr. Shen earned her Master’s in Public Health and her Medical Degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Gynecology and Obstetrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. During the 18 years Dr. Shen spent in general practice she became aware of the lack of physician education on post-reproductive health in women. Since her 2005 return to Johns Hopkins, she has committed herself to raising awareness of menopausal and post-reproductive health in women to help them stay their healthiest beginning in peri-menopause and as they age. Dr. Cornelia Trimble is a professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She has joint appointments in the Departments of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Oncology, and Pathology. Dr. Trimble completed her residency in anatomic pathology at Cornell University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in gynecologic pathology and a residency in gynecology and obstetrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her clinical interest and expertise is in developing new ways to intercept cancers — treating pre-invasive, cancer precursor lesions — caused by HPV. Her work has focused on two nonsurgical strategies: (1) immunotherapy via therapeutic HPV vaccination, and (2) repurposing artesunate, a plant-derived compound used to treat malaria, as a topical treatment administered by the patient herself to treat high-grade, intraepithelial HPV lesions. Her work has shown proof-of-principle, that it is indeed possible to eliminate HPV pre-cancers without surgery, and has been recognized internationally. Dr. Trimble has dedicated herself to delivering cutting-edge care to girls and women who have a very common problem, caused by a very common virus, HPV. Dr. Amanda Nickles Fader is a professor in the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. She is the former fellowship director and division director of the Johns Hopkins Kelly Gynecologic Oncology Service and currently is Vice Chair of Gynecologic Surgical Operations and the Director of the Center for Rare Gynecologic Cancers. Additionally, she serves as the 2024-2025 President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Fader received her undergraduate degree with highest distinction in music (violin performance) and pre-medicine from the University of Virginia. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh. Dr. Fader then underwent gynecologic oncology fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic. She has co-authored more than 230 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and is recognized as an expert in rare gynecologic tumors, clinical trials and quality and safety in surgery. She has a special interest in uterine serous carcinoma and low-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary and currently serves as the PI or co-PI of three international NRG Oncology clinical trials. Dr. Fader serves as a national board examiner in gynecologic oncology for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Editor of the Gynecologic Oncology journal is a member of the Rare Tumor and Uterine Corpus Committees of the NRG/Gynecologic Oncology Group. She is also co-founder of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology BRIDGES Program, a two-year longitudinal clinical trials and career development program for early-career oncologists. She has been the recipient of several research grants and awards for her research, including the Society of Gynecologic Oncology Innovations Award, the Best AAGL Paper in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Oncology Surgery, a Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Clinical Trials Academy Leadership Award, and National Cancer Institute Cervical SPORE grant. Dr. Fader is consistently recognized for clinical excellence on lists such as Baltimore magazine’s Top Docs and Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors, and is a recipient of the Top 10 Docs, Compassionate Doctors and Patient Choice Awards from Vitals.com. She has particular expertise with the surgical and medical management of uterine (endometrial), ovarian, cervical and vulvar cancers, as well as the treatment of women who are at high risk for developing a gynecologic malignancy. She has a special interest in caring for patients throughout the entire spectrum of their lives: from preventive oncology — minimizing key risk factors that can lead to gynecologic cancers — to survivorship initiatives addressing all aspects of recovery, including emotional well-being, sexual health and clinical follow-up.
