Overview
“My dad was my biggest influence in medicine,” he said. “He was a combat medic in the Air Force, and later worked in occupational medicine. Any time we had any sickness or injuries growing up, he would take care of us or stitch us up at home.” Cook completed an undergraduate degree in exercise science at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. After training for a time in physical therapy, he was drawn to the profession of physician assistant because he liked being able to make a difference in every aspect of an individual’s health. “I liked family medicine the most because I felt that I could make the largest impact on the largest section of the community,” he said. “With family medicine, you have the time and ability to establish a long-term relationship with patients and follow up with them through their entire life.” For a time during his training, Cook worked in a pharmacy, an emergency department and a nursing home at the same time. He recalls one particular patient who made an impact on him – an older gentleman who he cared for in all three settings. “He came into the pharmacy regularly, and I was very familiar with him. At one point when he had a health crisis, I cared for him in the emergency room, and later I was able to take care of him at the nursing home until he passed away. That’s been one of the most impactful experiences I’ve had; it was very humbling to develop a relationship with him in multiple settings and then to provide care for him and compassion for his wife at the end of his life.” Cook completed part of his training at Ballad Health Medical Associates Family Medicine in Greeneville, and wanted to join the clinic full time after graduation because he was impressed by the clinic’s internal culture. “I love the atmosphere and the people,” he said. “They are so inviting and supportive, and Greeneville is a great place to raise a family.”.
