Philosophy of care | I have been caring for patients over 25 years. The central theme of my care is treating you (and every patient) with the utmost respect. We will make decisions together and I will treat you as if you are a member of my own family. I will use my expertise to explain all the particulars of your diagnosis and treatment options so that you can best make informed decisions for yourself. | Why I entered medicine | I decided to pursue a career in medicine at age 13 when my 11-year-old brother was hospitalized with a severe spinal infection. I never waivered in that decision, and found as I went through the process that I thoroughly enjoy helping others, finding ways to solve their problems and being their advocate through medical issues. I enthusiastically enjoy every day doing this type of work. | Community involvement | Since I came to this area in 1995, I have dedicated a substantial portion of my time to the community. I have served leadership roles at the local hospitals for 23 of those 25 years, have always treated everyone regardless of ability to pay, taken care of athletes for many hours on the fields and contributed to numerous local charities. I was honored to be inducted into the Warren County (N.J.) Hall of Fame for my community service. | Personal interests | My main interests are my children. My daughter works for the National Academy of Medicine. She received her master’s degree in Global Health from Duke University. She and I have traveled all over the world and pursue outdoor activities such as helicopter skiing in the Canadian Rockies, hiking Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, bungee jumping and doing a safari in South Africa, ice glacier hiking in Norway, and bar hopping in Copenhagen. My son just got drafted by the Chicago White Sox as a pitcher and I support his endeavors spending many hours on the baseball diamond. Why I entered medicine | I have always been interested medicine. Many members of my family are physicians. I had a great uncle who was one of the earliest neurosurgeons in Canada and two uncles who are surgeons: a neurosurgeon and a cardiothoracic surgeon. My father is also an orthopedic surgeon. They all have taken the time to share their interest and knowledge of medicine with me. During my undergraduate studies, I worked in a laboratory. I found out that working for hours on end at the laboratory bench was not for me. I enjoy interacting with people. I was accepted into medical school prior to obtaining my bachelor’s degree. I have many great memories from my years of training at the University of British Columbia, which I completed in 1990. I decided to specialize in orthopedics during my fourth year of medical school. I enjoyed being involved in the invasive procedures in all specialties. I won a gold medal in anesthesia, but I liked the satisfaction of fixing things in orthopedics. As an orthopedic surgeon, my father never pushed me into orthopedics, but he was happy to see me following in his footsteps. Dr. Hawk is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. Philosophy of care | Because everyone has unique issues and concerns about their musculoskeletal problem, I spend time learning about what is impacting you and designing a treatment plan to accomplish your goals. I make sure you understand both the details of your condition and the treatments I propose. In this way, we can truly move forward with shared decision-making to achieve an optimal outcome. Educating the next generation of orthopedic surgeons is also a priority of mine; I am leading a team to build a new orthopedic residency training program here at LVHN. | Why I entered medicine | I still remember as a child accompanying my father (an orthopedic surgeon) on his patient rounds. I dreamed of one day helping patients return to the activities they loved just as did. I studied hard, became an EMT, volunteered at a firehouse, worked ski patrol in college and taught the winter care emergency course to my fellow patrollers. In medical school I found orthopedic surgery to be the most exciting path for me, and I have never looked back. I have found immense satisfaction over the years helping patients feel and function better, and am so gratified hearing I have changed their lives for the better. | Community involvement | As the father of two preemies (born 11 weeks early), my wife and I have supported research to investigate the causes of premature birth. We have been on the leadership team for the Philadelphia March of Dimes' annual March for Babies for several years. Now, my practice focuses exclusively on the treatment of hand, finger, wrist and upper extremity conditions. | Why I entered medicine | I became attracted to medicine in high school as my interest in science grew. I really enjoyed science classes, and medicine seemed to be the road map to channel that interest into making a difference in people’s lives. Early in medical school, I developed an interest in orthopedics. In medicine, similar personalities tend to coalesce in particular specialties. Why I entered medicine | The men in my family traditionally studied engineering, and so becoming a chemical engineer felt like a natural fit for me. But when I was working for DuPont and then Nestle, I realized I was missing out on what I really liked most -- more direct contact with people. My father ran his own small business manufacturing parts out of metal and plastic to build different type of machines. This was the “family business,” so that’s where I spent many of my nights and weekends as a child. I was working on lathe and milling machines when I was about 8 years old. As an adult, I needed to work with my hands -- and not just with a pencil or computer. Surgery, particularly orthopedic surgery, allows me to do that. Thanks to years of mechanical and engineering training, I have a superior three-dimensional concept of how the body works and moves. Spine surgery is a great way for me to apply this understanding. Dr. Falatyn is highly rated in 4 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Spinal Stenosis, Invertebral Disc Disease, Spondylolisthesis, Microdiscectomy, and Cervical Disc Surgery.

LVPG Orthopedics And Sports Medicine-Hecktown Oaks
Philosophy of care | The simplest way to sum up my approach to care is that I treat each patient the way I’d want a member of my family to be treated. A major part of total joint replacement is working together with patients as a team. I focus on defining each patient’s goals and then devising a plan to help them function as fully as possible so they can return to the activities they love. Before we discuss surgery, I first try all conservative, non-operative modalities. Once those have been exhausted, I use the most modern surgical techniques, combined with tried-and-true pain management and rehabilitation approaches, to provide the best outcome possible. | Why I entered medicine | For me, medicine is my vocation; I don’t feel I could have been anything but an orthopedic surgeon. I was exposed to excellent mentors throughout my pre-medical and medical education who always put their patients first, heard them and walked through their treatments with them. My passion for orthopedic surgery was cemented when I began one-on-one work with patients during my clinical rotations in medical school. I strive to emulate my mentors every day and am humbled by the relationships I form with my patients. | Community involvement | I’m involved in social justice activities at my church, including service to homeless people. It’s an opportunity to connect with the community and help those in need. My other joy is mentoring undergraduates and medical students. It not only renews my own interest in medicine but also deepens my enthusiasm for orthopedic surgery. I consider it a privilege to help future generations of physicians, just as I was once helped. | Personal interests | I'm devoted to my family and friends and spend the majority of my free time with them enjoying the outdoors and attending sporting events. I’m an avid sports fan and continue to follow teams I grew up with back in Washington State – the University of Washington Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. As a newcomer to the Lehigh Valley, I also love checking out local sports here, not to mention exploring all the fantastic activities this area has to offer, especially the excellent food options. | Image | Lehigh Valley Hospital is ranked 25th in the country for orthopedic care on the 2025-2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list. LVPG Orthopedics And Sports Medicine-Hecktown Oaks
Philosophy of care | I think of medicine as a science and an art. There is no perfect answer for everyone — treatment needs to be based on your individual needs and goals. Whether or not a patient needs surgery, good medical care is a process to get a patient from injury or disease to treatment success and I like to remain involved in that complete process. | Why I entered medicine | I entered medicine because I wanted to help people and be challenged intellectually. I chose orthopedics, and specifically sports medicine, due to my passion for being active and playing sports while growing up. Fitness and sports remain an important part of my own life today. I have never required surgery, but have had several broken bones, including an ankle fracture in medical school. Dealing with those injuries provided me perspective on recovery and the importance of therapy in conjunction with surgical treatment. | Community involvement | I’ve participated in races raising money for various charities, including the Wounded Warrior Project, as well as community outreach projects during school and training in Philadelphia, such as Habitat For Humanity. I did public health outreach while in medical school. | Personal interests | My personal interests include football, baseball and hockey, as well as keeping fit by running, lifting weights and biking. I also enjoy food, especially grilling/smoking meat. | Image | Lehigh Valley Hospital is ranked 25th in the country for orthopedic care on the 2025-2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list. Why I entered medicine | I was 10 years old when I was diagnosed with a congenital abnormality of my right hip. At the time, I was an active athlete, and sports kept me focused. So, when I was told I would need two surgeries in two years and that I would be lucky to walk without a limp but likely not play sports again, I was devastated. I went for a second opinion, and when Dr. Tom Altizer told me not to worry, that I would be playing football in two years, I was hooked. Two years later, I was a triathlete and knew sports medicine orthopedics was my calling. From that point forward, everything I did in my personal sports career and schooling was to get me to sports medicine orthopedics -- almost to a fault, because while pursuing this dream I had a bit of tunnel vision to the other areas of medicine. Originally I was interested in sports medicine orthopedics as an academic rather than a surgeon, but a tragic accident in which I lost two close friends made me change my course. I landed in Orlando, Fla., where I started working with performance athletes and professional athletes. His top areas of expertise are Achilles Tendon Rupture, Osteoarthritis, and Frozen Shoulder.
LVPG Orthopedics And Sports Medicine-2775 Muhlenberg
Philosophy of care | I use for you and each of my patients the same treatment philosophy used for professional and college athletes, adjusted for your activity level. | Why I entered medicine | My goal since sixth grade was to be an orthopedic sports medicine physician, and I very much learned from and enjoyed my time as an assistant team physician for the Cincinnati Bengals and for the University of Cincinnati, and as a physician for pro tennis and beach volleyball tours. I am proud to return to my community to provide the same or better care than I received during my own athletic career. | Community involvement | I am involved in numerous outreach events. I also provide athletic coverage for Lehigh University and multiple area high schools. | Personal interests | When not working I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children, as well as traveling both locally and abroad. | Image | Lehigh Valley Hospital is ranked 25th in the country for orthopedic care on the 2025-2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list. "Philosophy of care | A long-distance runner and former rower, I understand how devastating injuries can be to athletes. My practice is dedicated to helping injured athletes return to peak performance as quickly and safely as possible. | Why I entered medicine | My biggest influences were my great-uncle, Peter Savage, and my father, Thomas Brislin. My great-uncle was an old-time general practitioner. He would do house calls, deliver babies and even set bones. He loved three things: family, medicine and fishing. My father had an old-fashioned ""black bag"" and would have me or my brother bring it to him when he would get called into the hospital for a patient. I would make ""rounds"" with my father when I was 5 or 6 years old. I just felt a deep calling to medicine. I never thought of becoming anything other than a physician. During the summer before my senior year in college, I participated in a program for pre-medical students run by a cardiothoracic surgeon in Scranton. I became very interested in surgery after spending weeks with general surgeons, plastic surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, and, of course, orthopedic surgeons. I entered medical school thinking about neonatology, the care of pre-term infants. But I was more drawn to surgery as medical school progressed. I enjoyed orthopedics most of all, because I really felt that this specialty could allow us to help restore patients to full function.". What is an orthopedic doctor?
An orthopedic doctor — also called an orthopedist — focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing problems with the bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons. These parts of your body make up the musculoskeletal system. The word “orthopedic” originally meant “straighten children,” as the field first helped children with bone and spine issues. Today, orthopedic doctors care for people of all ages, treating everything from broken bones and joint pain to sports injuries and long-term conditions like arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Why am I being referred to an orthopedic doctor?
Your primary care doctor might refer you to an orthopedic doctor if you have problems with your bones, joints, or muscles that require expert care. This could be due to an injury, such as a broken bone or torn ligament, or a chronic condition like arthritis or back pain. You might also see an orthopedic doctor if you’re experiencing pain, swelling, stiffness, or difficulty moving part of your body. They specialize in diagnosing and treating these issues and may suggest treatments like physical therapy, medication, or surgery to help you heal and regain strength.
What is the difference between orthopedic and orthopedist?
“Orthopedic” is the branch of medicine that focuses on treating the musculoskeletal system. An “orthopedist” is a doctor who practices in this field. For example, if you have a broken bone, you might see an orthopedist (the doctor) who specializes in orthopedic (musculoskeletal) care. Think of it this way — orthopedic describes what they do, and orthopedist describes who they are.
What surgeries are performed by orthopedic doctors?
Orthopedic doctors (orthopedists) and orthopedic surgeons both treat musculoskeletal conditions, but only surgeons perform surgeries. Orthopedic doctors focus on non-surgical methods. Surgeries include:
- Joint replacement surgeries: These replace worn-out joints, such as the knee or hip, with artificial ones. This is often done for arthritis patients to relieve pain and improve movement.
- Arthroscopy: This minimally invasive procedure uses small tools and a camera to repair problems inside a joint, such as torn cartilage or ligament damage.
- Fracture repair: Orthopedic doctors can stabilize broken bones using screws, plates, or rods to help them heal correctly.
- Spinal surgeries: These include procedures like fixing a herniated disc, stabilizing the spine, or correcting scoliosis.
- Tendon or ligament repairs: These surgeries fix injuries like a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee or a ruptured Achilles tendon in the ankle.
Some surgeries are outpatient, meaning you can go home the same day, while others might require a hospital stay for recovery.
When should I see an Orthopedic Doctor near Phillipsburg, NJ?

- Your primary care provider recommends it.

- Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.

How does MediFind rank Orthopedic Doctors near Phillipsburg, NJ?
MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.
What types of insurance are accepted by Orthopedic Doctors near Phillipsburg, NJ?
Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.
How can I book an appointment online with a Orthopedic Doctor in Phillipsburg?
MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Orthopedic Doctor search results page.
Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Orthopedic Doctor?
Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.
How can I prepare for my appointment with a Orthopedic Doctor near Phillipsburg, NJ?
Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:
- Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
- Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
- Family history of disease
- List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
- Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
- List of questions and concerns
- Your insurance card
You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.
What questions should I ask my Orthopedic Doctor?
Here are some sample questions:
- Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
- What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
- What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
- Are there other specialists I need to see?
- What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?
How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Orthopedic Doctor may know about?
MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.
MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
