Along with researchers and colleagues from multiple clinical divisions at the University of Michigan and other institutions, he developed and co-facilitate the UM CNS Precision Medicine conference. In this multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional conference, molecular results are incorporated from pediatric brain tumor patients (paired tumor/germline sequencing results and pre-clinical cell culture treatment studies) into their treatment. My past and ongoing research is focused on translational studies and clinical trials for children with brain and spinal cord tumors with a special emphasis on ependymoma and ATRT. Children with brain tumors continue to have poor outcomes compared to those with other cancers in this age group. I have analyzed the outcomes of treatment for ATRT and ependymoma in children, combining traditional modes of therapy, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, with molecularly targeted therapy. In the process we have identified novel clinical and molecular risk factors associated with outcomes. By identifying clinical risk factors associated with poor outcomes in these children, we can tailor therapy to improve outcomes in those at highest risk of treatment failures. Dr. Upadhyaya is highly rated in 17 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Rhabdoid Tumor, Teratoma of the Mediastinum, Glioma, Medulloblastoma, and Bone Marrow Aspiration.
