I’m a retina specialist who takes care of patients who have problems with the back of the eye. When a patient comes to see me, I like getting to know them and their history, so that I can tailor their treatment. My patients come from a variety of different backgrounds, so I find that I often learn as much from them as they do from me. Everybody has a different story and I very much like to learn about the patients to whom I provide care. Duke is a great place at which to work and from which to seek treatment because it’s a very collaborative institution. Everyone works together to do what’s best for the patient. Outside of work, I like to spend as much time as possible with my family. I also enjoy cooking, playing sports and watching sports. Dr. Jaffe is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD). His top areas of expertise are Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), Late-Onset Retinal Degeneration, Geographic Atrophy, Vitrectomy, and Trabeculectomy.

Vision is so intricately related to one's quality of life. Many patients who come to the Duke Eye Center are concerned that they could be going blind, but they rarely ask that question directly. It is important that my patients clearly understand their eye disease process, the risks, benefits and all treatment options so that we can make joint decisions. I try to reassure, when possible, and share the positives, such as 'their eye condition may only affect one eye' or that 'it is possible to improve their vision or prevent further visual loss'. We also discuss how other health problems or lifestyle decisions can affect their visual health. When someone has a vision threatening condition, it is my goal to ensure that they know that, as their physician, I will advise them and guide them through their treatment and the often complicated medical system. I enjoy what I do every day as part of the Duke Health family!. Dr. Fekrat is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD). Her top areas of expertise are Retinal Vein Occlusion, Endophthalmitis, Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), Vitrectomy, and Cataract Removal.

I am a retina specialist, and in this role, I treat patients who have problems with the back of the eye. My practice is focused on injection and laser-based treatment in the clinic, as well as complex surgical cases in the operating room. I treat conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusion, macular edema, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreomacular traction, secondary intraocular lens placement, and complex retinal detachments, among others. I truly enjoy the science behind treating retinal disease and helping patients optimize their visual potential. Many of the conditions I take care of require ongoing treatment and office visits, and one of my favorite things about my job is getting to know my patients and their families during these visits. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, running, and traveling. I am an ophthalmologist who specializes in the diagnosis and management of medical conditions affecting the retina, including macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, macular edema, and other macular diseases. I believe that no two patients are exactly alike. For each of my patients, I carefully consider exam findings, imaging, and patient needs and preferences to create a customized treatment plan. In addition to patient care, I study the biology, diagnosis and treatment of macular edema, and I am involved in basic laboratory science, ocular imaging analysis and clinical trials of new medications. I think that my time in clinic drives my research and that the insights gained from my research keep me at the cutting edge of diagnosis and treatment strategies for my patients. Outside of work I spend as much time as possible outdoors with my wife and daughter. In whatever time is left I can be found exploring western North Carolina on my mountain bike. What is the definition of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)?

Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is the deterioration of the part of the eye (macula) that allows for seeing clearly in the center of the field of vision, as well as the ability to see straight ahead, and is the leading cause of central vision loss among older individuals over the age of 50. Macular degeneration has two types: 1) Dry macular degeneration, and 2) Wet macular degeneration. Dry macular degeneration, also known as Non-neovascular macular degeneration, is the most common type (90%) and gradually causes significant vision loss as the macular cells deteriorate, leading to blurry vision and blank spots in the center field of vision. Wet macular degeneration is the less common and more serious type (10%) and occurs when new blood vessels grow (choroidal neovascularization; CNV) beneath the retina that leak blood and fluid into the macula and cause scarring that leads to rapid vision loss. Age-related macular degeneration is more common in individuals of European descent.

How does MediFind rank Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctors in North Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctors in North Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor in North Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor in North Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctors in North Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
