Dr. Steven J. Mentzer is a thoracic surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center. He is a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School.Dr. Mentzer received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and received his general surgical residency training at the Brigham. He completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Toronto. Dr. Mentzer also completed a research fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute where he investigated the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of T lymphocyte function. He is board certified in surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and surgical critical care.Dr. Mentzer’s clinical interests include diseases of the lungs and thoracic cancers, minimally invasive surgery of the lungs and esophagus, and minimally invasive surgery for esophageal cancer. Principal investigator for The Mentzer Lab, Dr. Mentzer is currently studying the adaptive processes involved in blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) and lung regeneration. He is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery.Dr. Wee’s clinical interest is in minimally invasive approaches to thoracic diseases. These include minimally invasive and robotic esophagectomy, lobectomy, thymectomy and mediastinal resection for thoracic malignancies. In addition, he treats benign esophageal disease such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, giant paraesophageal hernias, diverticulum, etc. He performs POEM procedures for achalasia as well as sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis and endoluminal therapies such as PDT, laser, and stents for palliation. His research interest is in the use of minimally invasive techniques to decrease pain, improve recovery, and improve ultimate outcomes.
