
Overview
Dr. Peter M. Abadir is a geriatrician and translational researcher at Johns Hopkins University. He serves as the Principal Investigator of the Johns Hopkins Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory for Aging Research, where he leads interdisciplinary initiatives to advance innovations in aging and resilience science. His clinical focus includes frailty, cognitive decline, and age-related conditions, while his translational research bridges molecular biology, bioengineering, and geriatrics. Dr. Abadir is an Associate Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and holds a joint appointment in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering. He also directs the Molecular Measurement Core of the Johns Hopkins Older Americans Independence Center and co-directs the Clinical Translation and Validation Core for the Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory. He currently serves as Chair of the MD Admissions Committee for the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, overseeing the selection of the next generation of leaders in medicine. Additionally, Dr. Abadir is the Deputy Editor of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and serves on several other journal editorial boards. Among his research contributions, Dr. Abadir was among the first to describe the presence of a mitochondrial angiotensin system, providing new insights into cellular energy metabolism and aging. His pioneering work has also focused on biomarkers for frailty and cognitive decline, including circulating mitochondrial DNA and inflammation-related pathways. Notably, his research on the use tof topical angiotensin system blockers has introduced novel approaches to wound healing in aging populations. Dr. Abadir is a recipient of the Nathan Shock Scholar in Aging Award and the Frederick L. Brancati Excellence in Mentoring Award. Additionally, he has received the Johns Hopkins Institute for Excellence in Education Leadership and Mentorship Award and was inducted into the Johns Hopkins Distinguished Teaching Society, reflecting his outstanding contributions to mentorship and education. Dr. Esther Oh is a Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise is in evaluation and management of memory disorders. She has an extensive experience in evaluating memory disorders in older adults with multiple chronic diseases, and takes and integrative approach in the treatment of memory disorders. Dr. Oh also serves as the co-director of the Johns Hopkins Memory and Alzheimer’s Treatment Center. Dr. Oh earned her M.D. from the UHS/Chicago Medical School. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she was a chief resident. She completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine and gerontology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and received her Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Oh has received numerous awards including the Merck New Investigator Award, AFAR New Investigator Award in Alzheimer’s disease, and the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Scholars Award. She is also a recipient of several major grants from the National Institute on Aging (NIA). She has also been honored for her teaching by Excellence in Teaching Award in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology in 2013 and 2017. Dr. Oh’s research is primarily focused on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Her current projects include: development of biomarkers for detecting early stages of Alzheimer’s disease; understanding the interrelationship between delirium and Alzheimer’s disease; cognitive changes after surgery; and understanding the role of sensory problems (hearing and vestibular function) in Alzheimer’s disease. A native of Athens, Greece, Professor Lyketsos graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in Psychology and from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis with a Medical Doctorate. He completed residency and Chief Residency in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, as well as a fellowship in clinical epidemiology. An active clinician, teacher, and researcher, Dr. Lyketsos is a world expert in the care and treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD). He carried out pioneering work on the epidemiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric features of AD. His team is developing biomarkers to accelerate treatment development for AD while designing and implementing innovative clinical trials. He leads efforts to ensure the provision of state-of-the-art Dementia Care for people with dementia in the community. Dr. Lyketsos is the Elizabeth Plank Althouse Professor at Johns Hopkins University. He directs the Johns Hopkins Bayview Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, as well as the Richman Family Precision Medicine Center of Excellence in Alzheimer’s Disease and the Memory and Alzheimer’s Treatment Center. He is the recipient of multiple awards including the 2022 Argo Award for Science from the President of the Hellenic Republic. He has authored/co-authored over 450 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, commentaries, as well as five books. His work has been cited over 76,000 times with an h-index of 149. A 2021 Stanford University publication reported that he ranked #13 out of 9,246 scientists worldwide (all-time) in the field of Geriatrics.
