My brother had terrible eczema as a child, to the point where we would ask him if he wanted to wear shorts in the summer, and he would say “No, thanks.”' I promised myself that I would one day help kids like him. I am proud to have achieved double board certification in pediatrics and dermatology. I feel like a detective when I see a child with a new skin problem; I like to work with families to solve the mystery and figure out how to make my patient feel better. I grew up and attended medical school in India before moving to the U.S. My dad, an engineer, influenced my deep understanding that many people lack the advantages other people enjoy. It’s humbling to be able to positively impact the life of every child. Radiologists work with clinicians behind the scenes to help guide their decision-making and we don’t often meet patients personally. But we do get great personal satisfaction from our work. I once visited with an infant who had a rare condition I’d helped doctors diagnose. When the baby started crawling toward me, it was truly amazing and rewarding. It’s heartbreaking to see handicapped children who can’t get the medical care they need. I feel strongly about caring for people who don’t have the economic resources to take care of themselves. Dr. Mario Andres Aycart is a pediatric plastic surgeon at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware. He was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador and raised in Miami, Florida. He is a graduate of Cornell University and received a MD from Tufts University School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed a residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the Harvard Plastic Surgery Program. During his training, he completed a two-year research fellowship. Prior to joining Nemours, he completed his pediatric craniofacial surgery fellowship at the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and University of Toronto. I enjoy the dynamics of children and their parents. I love to be able to help children and see the smile on the families’ faces. Joseph E. Murray MD, the Nobel laureate and pioneering plastic surgeon, probably said it best: “Service to society is the rent we pay for living on this planet.” I consider myself incredibly fortunate to help children with facial differences. Children are our most precious resource and our hope for a brighter future. Helping to be a small part of that is a true privilege and source of a daily sense of wonder. Medicine is a service-oriented profession and as plastic surgeons, we are uniquely positioned and privileged to care for the afflicted in all walks of life. Most importantly, I’ve come to realize and appreciate the critical measures of a successful operation: quality of life, functional restoration, and social well-being of the child and family. My patient care philosophy involves providing the best care possible tailored to each individual’s situation with a focus on clear communication, patient and parent education, and shared decision making. Working with families during these challenging times provides an opportunity to create a genuine connection to better understand the patient/family perspective and optimize surgical outcomes. Dr. Aycart is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Aplasia Cutis Congenita. He is also highly rated in 6 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly, Polydactyly, Branchial Cleft Cyst, and Autosomal Cleft Palate. Dr. Aycart is board certified in American Board Of Plastic Surgery.

I grew up in Delaware and my interest in medicine started here at Nemours. I have a sister with special needs and being a part of the family-centered care that she received at Nemours sparked my interest in the field of pediatrics. I truly love my job. I enjoy taking care of children of all ages and individualizing every visit to the needs of each child and their family. In pediatrics there is a unique opportunity to build relationships with not only a patient, but their families as well, which makes my job so rewarding.  A child’s visit to the hospital can often be scary, but building rapport and relationships with individuals, not just patients, is important to making them feel comfortable. I really appreciate so many different aspects of pediatrics and am thankful that I have the opportunity to care for children in our primary care office, children admitted to the hospital, and patients in our dermatology access clinic. I am excited about teaching and education. I enjoy teaching children about their health and how to take care of their bodies, as well as educating families about caring for their child’s health care needs. I received fantastic training as a pediatric resident here at Nemours, and I take great satisfaction in supporting and teaching the residents and medical students as they pursue their interests and careers in pediatrics. I strive to listen and make sure I am addressing the concerns and needs of each individual patient and their family. As a mom, I know that it can be difficult to express your concerns, especially in a busy room with a sick child. My goal is to be approachable, both during the visit and afterwards, so that my patients and their families know they can always ask questions or express their concerns at any time.    Outside of my work at Nemours, I try to make a difference in my community through volunteering with my church, with the Salvation Army, and with the Special Olympics of Delaware. I’m a radiologist at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington, and I also interpret medical images for children who visit other Nemours facilities in Delaware Valley and Florida. I enjoy radiology because I can focus on the interesting puzzle of diagnosis and also work collaboratively with referring physicians. I’m married and have two young sons. Pediatric radiology allows me to interact and connect with my patients at a greater level than adult practice. And working with different specialists in a pediatric setting makes it a joy to provide the highest quality and most technologically advanced care. I’m passionate about helping kids get better with the least amount pain or life disruption. It’s personally fulfilling to make a diagnosis that saves a child from an unnecessary or painful procedure. My father, who was a physician, was a great role model. He was caring, smart, and made a difference by helping his patients live healthier and more productive lives. I’m privileged to also have this opportunity. Dr. Averill is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Aplasia Cutis Congenita. What is the definition of Aplasia Cutis Congenita?

Aplasia cutis congenita is a condition in which there is congenital (present from birth) absence of skin, with or without the absence of underlying structures such as bone. It most commonly affects the scalp, but any location of the body can be affected. While most people with Aplasia cutis congenita have no other abnormalities, some people have congenital malformations involving the cardiovascular (heart), gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and central nervous systems. The cause of this condition is unclear and appears to be multifactorial (many different factors appear to play a role); contributing factors may include teratogens, genes, trauma, and compromised blood flow to the skin.

When should I see an Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor in Delaware, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor in Delaware, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctors in Delaware, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctors in Delaware, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor in Delaware, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor in Delaware, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctors in Delaware, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Aplasia Cutis Congenita doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
