Learn About Beryllium Disease

What is the definition of Beryllium Disease?
Beryllium disease (also known as berylliosis) is an occupational lung disease that is a type of metal poisoning caused by inhaling beryllium dusts, vapors, or compounds or its absorption into the skin. Beryllium is a metallic element used in the manufacture of electronics, dental alloy preparation, technological ceramics, and metals extraction. Beryllium disease can be either acute or chronic.
What are the symptoms of Beryllium Disease?
Symptoms of acute beryllium disease include a rapid onset of severe lung inflammation (pneumonitis), increasing shortness of breath (dyspnea), coughing, and possibly skin and eye effects. Symptoms of chronic beryllium (berylliosis) disease may include fatigue, loss of appetite, fever, night sweats, weight loss, red skin patches or spots, dry cough, chest pain, increasing shortness of breath, sore throat, nasal inflammation and discharge, inflammation of the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (air passages), and enlarged lymph nodes. Chronic beryllium disease may also lead to the development of granulomatous pulmonary fibrosis.

What are the current treatments for Beryllium Disease?
Treatment for acute beryllium disease may include corticosteroids, mechanical ventilation, and supportive care. While there is no cure for chronic beryllium disease, treatment may include corticosteroids, oxygen, and supportive care. Patients with chronic beryllium disease who do not respond to corticosteroids may be treated with immunosuppressive drugs, such as methotrexate and azathioprine combined with folic acid.
