"Monica Bhatia, MD specializes in the care of children with noncancerous blood disorders who may benefit from bone marrow transplantation, especially sickle cell anemia. She and her colleagues are working to reduce the toxicity (side effects) and complications of this treatment without compromising its effectiveness, and to make it available to more patients. The field of pediatric hematology brings with it many intellectual challenges, and bone marrow transplantation in particular is especially dynamic. Dr. Bhatia has the opportunity to provide care for the sickest children, potentially curing their disease. She builds strong relationships with her patients and their families that last for years. It is inspiring for her to see young patients grow up to lead healthy, productive lives. NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a robust program for bone marrow transplantation for sickle cell anemia - the only cure for this disease. Dr. Bhatia and her team have witnessed remarkable results among children who are cured with bone marrow transplantation and spared from the potentially life-threatening complications of sickle cell disease. Yet despite the advances made, only 15 percent of patients with sickle cell disease have a matched sibling bone marrow donor. Therefore, Dr. Bhatia and her team conduct research to evaluate a procedure called ""CD34-selected stem cell transplantation"" to remove T-cells from donor bone marrow for patients without a matched sibling donor. This approach reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a potential complication of bone marrow transplantation in which T-cells from the donor attack the tissue of the recipient. This approach to harnessing stem cells could potentially make bone marrow transplantation a safer, effective option for many patients who are seeking a cure for sickle cell disease. Dr. Bhatia and her colleagues are currently assessing reduced-intensity transplantation, which uses lower doses of chemotherapy to decrease the risk of side effects and long-term complications without lowering the effectiveness of treatment. She is also interested in looking for ways to further improve the quality of life of patients who have had a bone marrow transplant in addition to fertility preservation.". Dr. Bhatia is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Bone Marrow Transplant. She is also highly rated in 9 other conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Sickle Cell Disease, Hemoglobinopathy, Congenital Hemolytic Anemia, Hemolytic Anemia, and Bone Marrow Transplant. Dr. Bhatia is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. Dr. Bhatia is currently accepting new patients.
CUIMC/NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital
Prakash Satwani, MD specializes in the use of bone marrow transplantation to treat children and adolescents with leukemia, lymphoma, or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Bone marrow transplantation is a dynamic, intriguing field with multiple complex issues. Dr. Satwani has always enjoyed solving puzzles and is attracted to the intellectual challenge of caring for patients whose lives may be saved or extended with bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Satwani is also inspired and motivated by the long-lasting and rich relationships formed with patients and their families, and often keeps in touch with families long after their child's treatment has been completed. Dr. Satwani teaches medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and nurse practitioners about bone marrow transplantation. It's important to educate people so they can learn the latest advances and provide the best care possible for patients. To continue to achieve those advances, Dr. Satwani conducts clinical research in reducing the life-threatening complications related to transplantation, such as infections and graft-versus-host disease. Dr. Satwani and colleagues also evaluate reduced-intensity bone marrow transplantation preparative regimens, which use lower doses of chemotherapy with the hope of decreasing short-term and long-term complications without compromising the effectiveness of treatment. Dr. Satwani is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Bone Marrow Transplant. He is also highly rated in 14 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Graft Versus Host Disease (GvHD), Anemia, Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis, Sickle Cell Disease, and Bone Marrow Transplant. An internationally known leader in hematology, A. Samer Al-Homsi, MD, MBA, is system chief of blood and marrow transplant and cellular therapy at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, where he also serves as director of faculty and academic affairs in medical oncology. In his position, Dr. Al-Homsi treats patients in need of blood and marrow transplantation for blood cancers and other blood conditions. He also received training and practiced in France. He came to Northwell from the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health, where he was executive director of transplantation and cellular therapy. His research efforts throughout his career have focused on innovations that lead to better patient care in blood and marrow transplantation. The poet Kahlil Gibran wrote that work is love made visible, and I believe medicine is love made visible, says Dr. Al-Homsi. Every patient has unique needs, based not just on their specific condition, but also on their cultural background, family situation, and the impact of their disease. We're fortunate at Northwell to have care delivered by a large team that's there to address all those aspects.Dr. Al-Homsi is looking forward to advancing more clinical research at Northwell's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. That will likely facilitate the development of more therapies that can treat patients, he says, and in a way that's safer and more effective.Dr. Al-Homsi doesn't just focus on the physical effects of conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma with decades of patient care, he also knows the tremendous value of a deeper conversation about how cancer is affecting patients mental health and everyday function. His priority is to learn about the patient first and the disease second. That perspective on patient advocacy and approaching each interaction with compassion and love is the same now as it was when he first entered medical school, he recalls. I wanted my life to matter, and to make a difference, he says. I'm not trying to change the world, but I can change patients' lives. I can change their world, and that's incredibly rewarding and meaningful. Dr. Al is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in Bone Marrow Transplant.
