He has served on various committees and working groups of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), including the WHO Expert Team on SARS in China in 2003.His research for has focused on epidemiology and clinical features of Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, malaria, toxoplasmosis and other parasitic diseases in Brazil, Bangladesh, Guatemala and elsewhere. Since returning to BWH in 2008 his focus has been on clinical infectious diseases with special interest in parasitic and tropical diseases and musculoskeletal infections.
