“Helping others is my reason to be – giving my patients and their families hope, getting to know them, their fears, their joys, becoming part of the family and making a difference. This drives me and makes me happy, every day.” In a life dedicated to healing, Valmarie Ramos, M.D., finds joy. Dr. Ramos joined the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute in July 2019. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in hematology, medical oncology and internal medicine. She is fellowship trained and treats all forms of cancer with a special interest in breast cancer, lymphoma and benign/malignant hematology. She is fluent in Spanish. The daughter of a registered nurse, she learned the privilege of medicine from her mother’s example. “She dedicated her life to sharing love and kindness. I understood early on that helping others wasn’t just what I wanted to do, but who I was – my reason to be,” Dr. Ramos says. The values her mother instilled led to a career path in oncology. “In med school, I saw firsthand the need for love and compassion in cancer patients, inspiring a commitment to make things better for them,” she says. Dr. Ramos attended Universidad Autonoma of Guadalajara Medical School and completed her medical education at Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. She gained important hands-on experience during her internship and residency at Dr. Ramon E. Betances Hospital–Mayaguez Medical Center. She did a year of oncology research at the University of Puerto Rico, where she also earned her bachelor’s in sciences with honors, completed a hematology/oncology fellowship and served on the faculty. Dr. Ramos is in demand speaking and presenting clinical topics and has made many television appearances. She volunteers her time for organizations fighting hunger and improving education. A former professional ballet dancer, she remains a strong proponent of the arts. More than anything, she cherishes the opportunity medicine brings to make a real difference. “Every day, I help others. I learn something new. I meet awesome people and get to be a part of their lives and health journey. As long as I am able to make a difference in the lives of others, my one life is worth every breath,” she says. Dr. Ramos is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). She is also highly rated in 33 other conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Familial Colorectal Cancer, Inflammatory Breast Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, and Paget Disease of the Breast. Dr. Ramos is board certified in American Board Of Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, 2011 and American Board Of Internal Medicine, Hematology, 2015. Dr. Ramos is currently accepting new patients.

What is the definition of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)?

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a slow-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow which produces high levels of abnormal white blood cells (lymphocytes). Unlike normal cells, the abnormal white blood cells in chronic lymphocytic leukemia do not fight infection properly and crowd out red blood cells and platelets, which may result in anemia, infections, and bleeding. While chronic lymphocytic leukemia starts in the bone marrow, over time the disease spreads through the bloodstream to other parts of the body, especially the lymph nodes, as well as the liver and spleen, which then become enlarged. There are two main types of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, one that progresses very slowly (B cell), and one that progresses more quickly (T cell), which is the more serious type. Diagnostic tests can determine if chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the type that progresses slowly by finding the proteins, ZAP-70 and CD38, on the leukemia cells, which can predict a better long-term outcome. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the most common type of leukemia in adults, and more often affects individuals who are white, middle-aged, or older, usually over the age of 70, while occurring very rarely in children. In general, chronic lymphocytic leukemia is categorized as asymptomatic (without symptoms), symptomatic, progressive, refractory (resistant to treatment), or recurrent. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is further categorized by the following stages: Stage 0 – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes), without any sign or symptom of leukemia. This is a slow-growing stage. Stage I – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes) and enlarged lymph nodes. Stage II – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes), enlarged liver, spleen, or lymph nodes. Stage III – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes), and not enough red blood cells, enlarged liver, spleen, or lymph nodes. Stage IV – Too many white blood cells, and not enough platelets or red blood cells, enlarged liver, spleen, or lymph nodes. The stage of chronic lymphocytic leukemia helps to determine the treatment and outcome (prognosis).

When should I see a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Egg Harbor Township, NJ?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Egg Harbor Township, NJ?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctors near Egg Harbor Township, NJ?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctors near Egg Harbor Township, NJ?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Egg Harbor Township, NJ?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Egg Harbor Township, NJ?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctors near Egg Harbor Township, NJ?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
