What is the definition of Cytomegalovirus Antenatal Infection?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) antenatal infection, also known as congenital cytomegalovirus infection, is when a baby is born infected with the cytomegalovirus. While cytomegalovirus is a common virus, most infected individuals do not experience any symptoms. However, in some cases a pregnant woman can transmit cytomegalovirus to her unborn child, after which some infants born with cytomegalovirus antenatal infection may experience health problems or birth defects.
What are the symptoms of Cytomegalovirus Antenatal Infection?
Symptoms of cytomegalovirus antenatal infection can include health problems present a birth or that develop later. In severe cases, cytomegalovirus antenatal infection can cause stillbirth. Other symptoms of cytomegalovirus antenatal infection present at birth may include low birth weight, jaundice (yellowing of skin and whites or eyes), rash, enlarged spleen and liver, damaged retinas, and seizures. Some infants with cytomegalovirus antenatal infection may develop long-term health problems, such as developmental and motor delay, weakness, a small head, hearing and vision loss, and seizures. The hearing loss associated with cytomegalovirus antenatal infection may be progressive.
