My mother’s career as a nurse started my interest in medicine. I volunteered as a candy striper during high school and worked as a nursing assistant through college. After college and medical school in my home state of Ohio, I moved to Delaware for a Nemours residency that combined pediatrics with physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a way to help children with neuromuscular conditions reach the highest function that they can. I find my patients fun to work with, I love watching them grow, and I enjoy getting to know them and their families. The kids I treat inspire me with their resilience. I’m passionate about helping families of children with neuromuscular injuries or congenital issues become active, informed participants on their child’s care team. It takes a group effort to help an injured child return to prior function or to help a child with a chronic condition make the most of function they have. I make the patient and family’s goals my own. We may be trying to return a child to sports quickly after a concussion or helping a child with a chronic condition participate in meaningful activities. Rehab at Nemours means physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and others working together with the family. Teamwork is one of our strengths. Dr. Owens is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of DiGeorge Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), Developmental Dysphasia Familial, Mucopolysaccharidosis Type 1 (MPS I, Hurler Syndrome), and Hydranencephaly.

I was born in Vietnam and raised in the United States. Following my undergraduate study, I postponed my dream of becoming a physician to serve as a missionary. As it turned out, that was my initial bedside training. Later, my allergy training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital led to a realization that caring for children with allergies would be my life’s work. I find working with children rewarding and refreshing. It’s impossible not to care and be inspired by their resiliency when they are sick and their capacity for healing. I love taking care of children with allergies, especially food allergies and eczema. So it’s natural that I have become quite interested in researching these conditions. My true satisfaction comes from learning and sharing knowledge with parents and our residents about how to improve the quality of life of children with allergies. It gives me a sense of satisfaction and purpose to be connected with the people around me — co-workers and parents — as we work together to build strong care teams. The more everybody cooperates to help make things better for a sick child, the better the healing process. In my mind, caring for children is all about a team effort. Dr. Aaron C. Chidekel is division chief of pulmonology, co-medical director of the sleep program and director of the hospital's cystic fibrosis program. He's an associate professor of pediatrics at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, author of medical journal articles and books, invited lecturer and active researcher. How can you not love kids and want to do all you can to help them? After all, they are our future. If you can positively impact the life of a child, you also impact a little bit of our future. I became a doctor because I wanted to help people. One of my mentors in medical school was an early pioneer in the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF), and I picked up on his passion for helping those with the disease. Since his early work to today, kids with CF are living longer and better. That's very exciting and led to my wanting to help kids with CF, too — as well as those with asthma and other pulmonary conditions. I'm passionate about working with the whole family. It's the best way for each child to have the best possible outcome, and helps the whole family feel ownership of and contribution to the child's health. I like to help the kids and their families deal with the challenges they are facing. This can be challenging for me as well, but it's ultimately very rewarding when I can make a positive difference for a child and family.I'm also passionate about teaching kids and their families about asthma, CF and other conditions and how they can take care of themselves and live as healthy a life as possible.Learning is very important to my own practice as a doctor as well. I find it crucial to stay up to date on the very latest regarding conditions and treatments. I believe that caring and contributing my skills as a physician can help make a difference for a child and family. Also, a positive attitude can help people get through tough challenges and sometimes serious health concerns. I believe my patients pick up on this and gain confidence from it — although they're often incredibly positive already, no matter what life has thrown at them. Dr. Vandna Passi is a pediatric pulmonologist at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. She's an author of peer-reviewed medical journal articles, an invited presenter and an active researcher. I always wanted to work with children, and knew I wanted to be a pediatrician since I finished college. Then, in medical school, I spent a lot of my fourth year in pediatric subspecialties. Now, I get a lot of satisfaction seeing my patients over the long term — I can see their progress and development, and watch them as they grow. Children are such fun to work with and it can be simpler to approach their health issues than with adults. It's very fulfilling. One reason I chose pediatric pulmonology was because I liked the mix of being able to see and help children on an outpatient basis (helping kids on well and sick visits in our clinic) and also provide inpatient care to children who are acutely sick and admitted to the hospital. In my residency, I saw a lot of inner-city children. Many became seriously ill simply because their asthma wasn't being cared for, they hadn't been diagnosed properly, or they (and their families) hadn't been properly educated on how to manage their care. This was way more common than it should have been. I knew I wanted to help these kids, as well as all those who had other pulmonology issues, too. I'm passionate about working with patients and families to educate them on the conditions they’re dealing with, and how to prevent serious episodes and achieve the best possible quality of life. I'm also passionate about our hospital and staff continually setting best practices for treating children with pulmonology conditions and following those procedures routinely. I'm especially interested in these procedures being followed in our intensive care unit (ICU), as well as in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and outpatient clinic. A big part of what I do is educate families on what they need to know regarding their child's condition and health, including proper medication and care. I can't be with their child at all times, so it's really about empowering each family to help their child's quality of life. In children with asthma, for instance, I feel they should never be limited. Together with their family, I want to help them do whatever they want to do in life. Dr. Passi is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of DiGeorge Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Subglottic Stenosis, Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome, Thanatophoric Dysplasia, and Kozlowski Warren Fisher Syndrome.
