Medicine runs in my family. Both of my parents were physicians (and role models) and my wife is a pediatrician and hospitalist at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. As a Nemours pediatric neurologist, I treat kids with a variety of medical problems involving the nervous system and brain. I enjoy educating families and making life a little easier for them. I’ve always enjoyed working with kids. I was a camp counselor when I was in college and medical school, and later a doctor at a camp for special needs kids. I like watching children grow and develop. Taking care of children is fun and rewarding. I feel strongly about helping children with neurological problems live up to their full potential. My passion is to educate kids and their parents, reassuring them that we’ll do whatever it takes to help make life as normal as possible. The children who come to me are often facing a serious condition that’s scary for the entire family. So more than making a difference medically, I always try to be compassionate and understand where they’re coming from, their anxieties, and concerns. I try to put myself in their place. His top areas of expertise are Absence Seizure, Epilepsy Juvenile Absence, Seizures, and Memory Loss.

Medicine seems to run in my family. My father trained as a physician in Iceland, and my childhood was split between the US and Reykjavik, Iceland. At first, I wanted to be a veterinarian, but once in medical school I had my heart set on Pediatrics from the start. I love kids. With eight children of my own I have realized that every child is unique and that there is no one right way to parent. Parents can be certain that I will be upfront with them regarding their child’s illness. I treat people the way I want to be treated when I step into a physician’s office with one of my kids. I try to listen more than I speak and learn from others at every opportunity. To me the treatment of a child is a collaboration between the child, his/her parents and the physician and team at Nemours. Together we will find the best solution, always. Dr. Sigurdardottir is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy. Her top areas of expertise are Seizures, Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure, Memory Loss, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

As a society, our overall health continues to be poor. I try to make a difference by being involved in medical care individually and in the community. I enjoy working with children, especially those with congenital heart disease. This is an inherited condition and not acquired — compared to adult cardiology — so it’s not their fault. Kids’ energy is amazing — and so is all the good energy I get from their parents and my colleagues. I have a passion about using exercise as a diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tool. My interests include:Cardiac OncologySports Cardiology. Dr. Arevalo is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy. Growing up in Costa Rica, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. Later while I was in medical school in the United States, I decided to specialize in pediatrics so I could help children with kidney problems. I like that Nemours is an environment where there’s lots of collaboration to help patients and lots of support for their families. It makes my day when I can make children feel better, make them smile and interact with them. Working with children and their families is so rewarding. Helping children with very severe kidney problems get all the way to transplantation and then seeing them through the process. I love watching them do so well and feel so much better afterwards. It’s very motivating. It’s important to me that our patients have access to the most innovative care possible. For my patients’ sake, I try to practice in the most evidence-based way possible and to stay actively involved with the dialysis and kidney transplant community. In addition to my work as an orthopedic surgeon, I help educate our next generation of physicians. I train orthopedic surgery residents during their pediatric rotations, and I am the fellowship director at Nemours, where orthopedic surgeons do extra training to learn the art and science of pediatric orthopedics. I have academic appointments at The University of Florida and The Mayo Clinic, present original research at national meetings, give lectures as an invited speaker to various medical groups, and serve on committees for multiple national orthopedic organizations. Some of the highlights of this work have been producing educational content for patients and their families that can be found on the websites of the Scoliosis Research Society, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and Nemours’ own KidsHealth. It’s such an incredible privilege for parents to allow me to treat their children. I learned early in my orthopedic training just how amazing children are, even in the face of serious illness. Their toughness, resilience and positive attitudes inspire me to be the best doctor I can be to help them and their parents manage their conditions. I’m passionate about making a difference in children’s lives, and I’m so proud to work for Nemours. Nemours and I share mission-driven values, making sure that all children who need care have access to our services, and treating all children equally. I want to make sure all my patients receive individualized care, tailored to their specific needs. I’m passionate about learning new things, teaching others and helping all my patients, colleagues, students, assistants and friends accomplish their goals. My medical interests and expertise includes:ScoliosisSpinal DeformityIdiopathic ScoliosisNeuromuscular ScoliosisCongenital ScoliosisSyndromic ScoliosisEarly Onset ScoliosisKyphosisCerebral PalsyLeg Length DiscrepancyInfant Hip DysplasiaFractures We're doing all we can to help patients and their families understand and treat scoliosis. What is the definition of Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy?

Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy (EIEE) is a neurological disorder characterized by seizures. The disorder affects newborns, usually within the first three months of life in the form of epileptic seizures. Infants may have primarily tonic seizures (which cause stiffening of muscles of the body, generally those in the back, legs, and arms), but may also experience partial seizures, and rarely, myoclonic seizures (which cause jerks or twitches of the upper body, arms, or legs). Most infants with the disorder show underdevelopment of part or all of the cerebral hemispheres or structural anomalies. Some cases are caused by metabolic disorders or by genetic changes in several different genes. The cause for many cases can't be determined.

When should I see an Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor in Florida, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor in Florida, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctors in Florida, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctors in Florida, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor in Florida, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor in Florida, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctors in Florida, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
