Learn About Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome

What is the definition of Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome?
Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) is a rare, serious condition characterized by high levels of eosinophils (white blood cells) in multiple organs of the body and severe muscle pain. Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome is believed to be caused by consuming L-tryptophan supplements. L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid present in various foods and is manufactured as supplements or an ingredient in protein powders.
What are the symptoms of Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome?
Symptoms of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome have a rapid onset and vary between individuals. Symptoms may include fatigue, severe, progressive muscle pain, spasms, and weakness in the legs, back, and shoulders, joint pain, swelling, fever, skin rashes, cough, difficulty breathing, abdominal cramping, difficulty walking, numbness and tingling in the hands, arms, or legs, swollen, thickened skin, bladder dysfunction, mood and behavior changes, memory loss, difficulty concentrating and communicating, and hair loss. Once eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome becomes chronic, additional symptoms may include heart inflammation, irregular heartbeat, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
