Learn About Fetal Enterovirus Syndrome

What is the definition of Fetal Enterovirus Syndrome?
Fetal enterovirus syndrome occurs when a pregnant mother who is infected with an enterovirus passes the virus to her baby while it is the womb or during delivery. Enteroviruses are common viruses that most adults are immune to, but a pregnant woman who is not immune can pass the virus to her baby. A baby infected with an enterovirus may develop a mild or severe illness.
What are the symptoms of Fetal Enterovirus Syndrome?
Symptoms of a mild enterovirus infection in infants may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, mouth blisters, skin rash, and body and muscle aches. Symptoms of a severe enterovirus infection in infants may include viral conjunctivitis, hand, foot, and mouth disease, viral meningitis, viral encephalitis (brain infection), infection of the heart (myocarditis), infection of the sac covering the heart (pericarditis), hepatitis, sudden paralysis, inflammatory muscle disease, lung infection, coagulation abnormalities, sepsis, and rarely, organ failure and death. Congenital enterovirus infection in a fetus can lead to miscarriage, hydrops fetalis (abnormal build-up of fluid in tissues), fetal abnormalities of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary system, developmental delays, fluid in the lungs and/or abdomen, and severe respiratory failure.

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to care for those in need. My childhood experience in helping care for a terminally ill grandparent inspired me to make an impact in healthcare. This early motivation propelled me through the many steps of training, including graduating from Mercer University School of Medicine as a top national scholar and completing residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, with top surgical honors. I received my OB/GYN certification in 2009. Over this time, I have continually devoted myself to providing knowledgeable, compassionate and cutting-edge care. As a husband, father and member of the local Christian community, I understand how the different facets of life affect our health. My ambition is to recognize not only the physical but also the emotional, psychological and spiritual needs of women from all walks of life. In obstetrics, my interests include fertility evaluation, prenatal counseling and low- and high-risk pregnancies. As for gynecology, my expertise includes minimally invasive surgeries such as robotics, single incision laparoscopy, as well as vaginal prolapse repair. I was born and raised in Louisiana in a city just outside of New Orleans. Displaced by Hurricane Katrina, I moved to Monroe, Louisiana where I graduated with a degree in biology from the University of Louisiana. I then attended medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic medicine where I met my husband, Christian Sullivan. We then moved north to Michigan where I completed my OBGYN residency in Detroit. After completing residency we decided to return to his roots and relocated to the Tri-Cities area to raise our family and begin our careers. While practicing at Ballad OBGYN in Kingsport I met my nurse, Lisa Gibson, who will be joining me at State of Franklin OB/GYN. At work, she truly is my “better half” and a blessing to me and my practice. Lisa and I love our patients and are excited to be continuing to care for women in the Tri-Cities area. I am truly passionate about women’s healthcare. I am driven by the bonds I build with my patients over the course of their lives and the enjoyment I hold in keeping them healthy and well. My husband is a gastroenterologist in Bristol. We have two spunky boys, Christian and Jenson, who keep us busy. We love traveling, spending time outdoors and challenging each other at CrossFit. When not on dry land we can likely be found on a Disney cruise ship spending time in the middle of the ocean. Dr. Sullivan is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Fetal Enterovirus Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Polyhydramnios, Vaginal Bleeding in Pregnancy, Methimazole Antenatal Exposure, Fetal Enterovirus Syndrome, and Intrauterine Device Insertion.

A native of Elizabethton, I graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1984 and completed my undergraduate studies at Southern Missionary College in 1988. After receiving my medical education from East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine and graduating in 1992, I completed my OB/GYN specialty training at the University of Tennessee while serving at Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. I was encouraged by strong family ties to the Tri-Cities area where my father, mother, brother and sister practiced in various fields of medicine. Because I value my close relationships with God and family, I returned home to start my own practice in 1996. Since that time, I have been blessed with three wonderful children. There have been many challenges, rewards and miracles as a parent that have made me stronger and – in some ways – made me the physician I am today. As each child I deliver is born, I pause to reflect on what lives the little one will impact. I provide care from adolescence to geriatrics, as well as those needing specialized care. I enjoy providing reproductive healthcare services and never take for granted my role in bringing new lives into the world. I specialize in performing minimally invasive surgical procedures. I have pursued this specialty by promoting the role of advanced laparoscopic techniques and expanded my traditional laparoscopic skills to include the provision of da Vinci® robotic surgery and single-port techniques, as well as pelvic support procedures. I also offer in office procedures to include essure sterilization and hydrothermal ablation. Dr. May is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Fetal Enterovirus Syndrome.
