Overview
Dr. Kenneth M. Fine is an orthopaedic surgeon affiliated with Sibley Memorial Hospital, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and George Washington University Hospital, where he serves as an assistant clinical professor of orthopaedics for the University. He practices out of The Orthopaedic Center, located in Rockville, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Dr. Fine is currently the team physician and medical director of D.C. United professional soccer team, as well as a consultant in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine at Children’s National Medical Center. Dr. Fine was among the first group of surgeons in the country to become subspecialty certified in orthopaedic sports medicine. He has an expertise in arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and ankle; cartilage disorders; concussions in sports; and treating the patella. Dr. Fine earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery and a fellowship in sports medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Previously, Dr. Fine provided medical care for Olympic soccer teams during the 1996 summer Olympics, was co-medical director for the World Figure Skating championships in 2003 and served at the Olympic Training Center in 2008, where he was also the physician for the Junior U.S. Boxing Championships. Dr. Fine has also served as the physician for the U.S. fast-track speed skating team; the medical provider to Cirque du Soleil, the Boston Ballet Company and the Joffrey Ballet; the medical director for the Cherry Blossom 10-mile road race and National Race for the Cure; the director of orthopaedic sports medicine at George Washington University and Children’s National Medical Center; an orthopaedic consultant for the D.C. Divas professional football team; and the team physician for George Washington University teams and several high school teams. Dr. Fine has been named a Super Doctor by the Washington Post magazine, as well as a Top Doctor by Consumers’ Checkbook magazine and a Regional Top Doctor for the Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Washington-Baltimore areas by Castle Connolly. Dr. Fine has contributed articles for numerous publications, including InMotion, published by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine; articles on compartment syndrome and soccer injuries for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; and other scientific publications. Upon his return, he completed a one-year Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, MD.Dr. Shrout has been practicing in orthopaedic surgery since 1994, and retired from the U.S. Army in 2011 at the rank of Colonel. He has been in private practice in the Washington area since 2011, and has maintained his involvement in orthopaedic sports medicine by participating as a team physician for the D.C. United Men’s professional soccer team, and Head Team Physician for the D.C. United Women’s team in 2012. In 2013 he served as Head Team Physician for the inaugural season of the National Women’s Soccer League professional team, the Washington Spirit. He also has a particular interest in the treatment and prevention of sports related injuries of the upper extremity.
