Dr. Sanjaya K. Satapathy is the medical director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Institute, program director of Northwell's Transplant Hepatology Fellowship, and professor of medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.His path to medicine began in India, where he was inspired by his father an engineer with a passion for homeopathy to pursue a career in healthcare. He earned his medical degree from Veer Surendra Sai Medical College, followed by fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology in the early 2000s. During that time, he witnessed the profound need for liver transplantation in India, where access remained scarce. While presenting his research at a conference in the United States, Dr. Satapathy was drawn to the opportunities and possibilities for advancing transplantation in America. He decided to continue his career in the United States, completing additional residency and fellowship training before serving as a transplant hepatologist in Memphis. In 2019, he was recruited to Northwell. It was a dream to begin from zero and build a transplant program that could be a model not just for the area or the state, but for the country, says Dr. Satapathy. Within only a few years, we've been able to achieve that goal, because Northwell has all the elements and resources to be one of the best programs in the nation. The expertise we have is unparalleled, with a collaborative team that encompasses all levels of care. The program was founded just in time for a huge surge in demand for liver transplants in the area, he adds. Liver disease and other liver issues are on the rise, making the need for an extensive program crucial for those in the New York region. Part of the program's strength is innovation. For example, Northwell is utilizing an approach that allows donated organs to be safely preserved for a longer period of time, which means needed organs can travel longer distances even from as far away as Hawaii. Northwell is also running several clinical trials on transplant medications and operates a robust transplant hepatology fellowship program to train the next generation of doctors a program Dr. Satapathy launched.I'm passionate about this work, and particularly about my patients, he says. I see every patient as my family, and my focus is on what I can do next to help them. Dr. Satapathy is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Gilbert Syndrome. He is also highly rated in 25 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), Liver Transplant, and Endoscopy. Dr. Satapathy is board certified in American Board Of Internal Medicine, American Board Of Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology, and American Board Of Internal Medicine/Transplant Hepatology.

What is the definition of Gilbert Syndrome?

Gilbert syndrome is a mild liver disorder that impairs the body's ability to process bilirubin, a substance made when old red blood cells are broken down. This leads to fluctuating levels of bilirubin in the blood, sometimes causing levels to be high (hyperbilirubinemia). Most people with Gilbert syndrome do not have symptoms or have mild jaundice. In some cases, jaundice is triggered or made worse by stress, exercise, fasting, dehydration, drinking alcohol, or illness. Some people with Gilbert syndrome have reported other symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, nausea, or diarrhea. There has not been evidence these other symptoms are caused by hypebilirubinemia, and the cause of these symptoms currently is unclear. People with Gilbert syndrome may also have more side effects from certain drugs such as irinotecan. Gilbert syndrome is caused by genetic changes in the UGT1A1 gene and inheritance is autosomal recessive. Genetic changes in this gene cause reduced levels of a liver enzyme needed to eliminate bilirubin from the body, causing bilirubin to accumulate. People with Gilbert syndrome have about one third of the normal enzyme activity, which usually is enough to prevent symptoms from developing. Of note, genetic changes in the UGT1A1 gene can alternatively cause other disorders, such as Crigler-Najjar syndrome. There are two forms: Crigler-Najjar syndrome type 1 (CN-1) and Crigler-Najjar syndrome type 2 (CN-2). In both types, jaundice is persistent and more severe than in Gilbert syndrome, with CN-1 causing potentially severe symptoms. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish between Gilbert syndrome and CN-2 because of considerable overlap in measured bilirubin levels. Genetic testing to identify the specific genetic change present is sometimes needed for the correct diagnosis.

When should I see a Gilbert Syndrome doctor in New York, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Gilbert Syndrome doctor in New York, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Gilbert Syndrome doctors in New York, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Gilbert Syndrome doctors in New York, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Gilbert Syndrome doctor in New York, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Gilbert Syndrome doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Gilbert Syndrome doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Gilbert Syndrome doctor in New York, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Gilbert Syndrome doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Gilbert Syndrome doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Gilbert Syndrome doctors in New York, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Gilbert Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Gilbert Syndrome doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Gilbert Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
