About Andrea Vambutas MD, FACSDr. Andrea Vambutas is the Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. She is also Director for the Center of Hearing & Balance at the New York Head & Neck Institute. She is also the Medical Director of the Apelian Cochlear Implant Program and Professor of Otolaryngology & Molecular Medicine. She was instrumental in developing the Apelian Cochlear Implant Center, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2011. The center cares for infants and adults. The cochlear implant team is comprised of surgeons, audiologists, speech pathologists, social workers, sign language interpreters and deaf educators who provide all aspects of evaluation prior to, and rehabilitation following cochlear implantation. The center has been the recipient of many complicated otologic cases, and difficult clinical problems.Dr. Vambutas is a clinician-scientist that studies immune responses and their effect on hearing. There are three unique forms of hearing loss that may be amenable to medical therapy for recovery of natural hearing: Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease, Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Meniere s Disease. Timely treatment with steroids results in hearing recovery in about 60% of cases. Unfortunately, that response is lost over time with repetitive treatment. For those that fail to respond to corticosteroids, there are no alternate treatments. Deteriorating hearing is rehabilitated with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Despite how beneficial these devices are, they do not select for what we want to hear, unlike our brains that do it naturally and seamlessly. Her research interests are in the restoration of natural hearing in these steroid resistant patients. To this end, her laboratory has identified the critical role of an inflammatory protein, interleukin-1 (IL-1), in this disease. Her research group is running a NIH-sponsored phase I open-label clinical trial to determine if blockade of IL-1 can prevent further hearing loss in these steroid-resistant individuals (www.clinicaltrials.gov NCT01267994). Her laboratory is also trying to better understand the molecular mechanisms behind these diseases, specifically in distinguishing steroid sensitive and resistant hearing loss which would identify new biologic markers of disease.Awards and Recognition:Castle Connolley, Best DoctorsBest Doctors in AmericaOutstanding Teacher Awards, North Shore-LIJ Health System & Montefiore Medical CenterService Award, American Academy of Otolaryngology HNSProfessional Affiliations:Diplomat: American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck SurgeryFellow: American College of SurgeonsFellow, American Neurotology SocietyElected Member: New York Otologic SocietyElected Member: Henry Kunkel SocietyElected Member: American Association of Immunologists. My career began at Beth Israel Medical Center/Continuum Health Partners in Manhattan, as a Physician-Scientist at that institution s newly established Institute for Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer. I developed a basic science research laboratory, collaborating with senior investigators at the NYU School of Dental Medicine. My research was funded through a combination of national society and private foundation career development awards, and resulted in several publications, nationally recognized basic science research in head and neck oncology, and several national presentations and awards. In 2007, I was hired as Chief of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ), in the early years of the (then) North Shore-LIJ Health System and North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute. In this role I helped to establish one of the first fully integrated multidisciplinary oncology programs in our growing health system dedicated to the initial evaluation, care and survivorship of cancer patients, specifically those with head and neck tumors. The Head and Neck Oncology Program at Northwell has now evolved into one of regional as well as national renown, with the ability to deliver sophisticated multidisciplinary surgical and nonsurgical head and neck oncologic care at multiple sites throughout our network. Our clinical team also maintains a close collaboration with leading senior basic science investigators at Northwell's Feinstein Institute, focusing on HPV-associated oropharynx cancer. In 2014, I was appointed Northwell Health Cancer Institute s first Director of Surgical Oncology, and served in this position until early 2019. In the Spring of 2019, I was appointed Director of Operations of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. In this capacity I serve as the liaison between the Institute, its members, and the various hospitals and outpatient cancer treatment facilities throughout the Northwell network where cancer care is delivered. In 2015, I was appointed Chair of LIJ s Commission on Cancer (CoC) recognized Cancer Committee. In this role I have worked with clinical and administrative colleagues to better integrate the inpatient cancer activities and resources of LIJ and North Shore University Hospital with those of our outpatient Cancer Institute facilities. I am presently involved in defining and solidifying Cancer Institute oversight over inpatient cancer related resources and activities, as well as CoC standards. My clinical leadership and program building accomplishments have been recognized both regionally as well as nationally with an American Cancer Society Doctor of Distinction Award (2017), an American Head and Neck Society Presidential Citation (2017), and a position on the Advanced Training Council of the American Head and Neck Society. What is the definition of Glomus Tympanum Tumor?

A glomus tympanicum tumor is a tumor of the middle ear and bone behind the ear (mastoid).

When should I see a Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor in New York, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor in New York, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctors in New York, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctors in New York, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor in New York, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor in New York, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Glomus Tympanum Tumor doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals.
