
Overview
Karin Blakemore, M.D., is the director of prenatal genetics at the prenatal diagnostic center in the Johns Hopkins Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and she is a member of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine. In her clinical role, Dr. Toscano provides high-risk obstetric care, specializing in complex pregnancies. She sees patients for consultations, prenatal care visits, ultrasound visits and procedures, and as service attending on labor and delivery/antepartum. She is also deeply involved in clinical program building, including leading initiatives for universal perinatal depression screening at JH and the development of integrated care models for perinatal mood disorders. Dr. Toscano's research focuses on perinatal mental health, high-risk pregnancy, and innovations in obstetric ultrasound technology. Her work includes the development of interventions to prevent postpartum depression in high-risk obstetric populations, as well as the application of point-of-care ultrasound in low-resource settings. She has been awarded several grants, including funding from the NIH (Women's Reproductive Health Research Scholar) and GE Healthcare, and has published on topics ranging from maternal mental health to ultrasound applications in perinatal care.
