Herpes virus antenatal infection, also known as herpes virus neonatal infection, is a rare disease that occurs when a newborn infant becomes infected with genital (more common) or oral herpes simplex virus (HSV) during pregnancy, labor, delivery, or after birth.
What are the symptoms of Herpes Virus Antenatal Infection?
Symptoms of herpes virus antenatal infection may be mild or severe, depending on the type, herpes simplex virus I or II. Symptoms of herpes virus infection in a fetus or neonate can be serious. Symptoms of herpes virus antenatal infection appear anywhere between 9 and 30 days after birth and may include irritability; fever; poor feeding; bleeding easily; bulging soft spot (fontanelle); weakness; difficulty breathing; herpes sores (small, fluid-filled blisters ) on the skin, mouth, or eyes; lung infection (pneumonitis); bluish skin (cyanosis); yellowing of the skin, whites or eyes, and mucous membranes (jaundice); hepatitis; encephalitis; seizures; rashes; inflammation of the eye; brain damage; mental retardation; and death.
