Symptoms of herpes virus antenatal infection appear anywhere between 9 and 30 days after birth and may include irritability; fever; poor feeding; bleeding easily; bulging soft spot (fontanelle); weakness; difficulty breathing; herpes sores (small, fluid-filled blisters ) on the skin, mouth, or eyes; lung infection (pneumonitis); bluish skin (cyanosis); yellowing of the skin, whites or eyes, and mucous membranes (jaundice); hepatitis; encephalitis; seizures; rashes; inflammation of the eye; brain damage; mental retardation; and death.
