I grew up in China’s Hunan province as an active, athletic child. My mom was a physician and my dad was a medical school professor, so I had great role models. Even at the start of my medical training, I knew I wanted to be in a field where I get to work with children. After my first child was born premature and required NICU-level care, that experience only intensified my desire to work with kids. Having a child requiring medical care is both scary and stressful. As a young child I was hospitalized several times. My own pediatricians were role models for me and influenced my decision to become a doctor.
