What is the definition of Hyperlipoproteinemia Type 5?
Hyperlipoproteinemia type V is a disorder of blood plasma fats (lipids) that can be inherited or acquired that is characterized by very low density lipoprotein, decreased low density lipoprotein (LDL), and high density lipoprotein (HDL). Hyperlipoproteinemia type V can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke or heart attack.
What are the symptoms of Hyperlipoproteinemia Type 5?
Most individuals with hyperlipoproteinemia type V do not have any symptoms. The disease is usually discovered during an examination or upon symptoms of a stroke or heart attack. Some individuals with hyperlipoproteinemia type V may develop xanthomas (small, round, and whitish cholesterol deposits under the skin), especially around the eyes, and hypertriglyceridemic waist, which is an increased waist circumference > 90 cm in men or >85 cm in women.
