I always knew neonatology would be my path. I joined Nemours because their family-centered care philosophy aligns with mine. Here, parents can stay with their baby in the neonatal unit and help with care. I include them in decisions and respect their insights and instincts. In many ways, they are the most important members of the care team. Nobody goes through pregnancy thinking that their baby will end up in a neonatal intensive care unit. But when it happens, I want to be the one to help make it better and easier for the family. The whole idea of watching a premature baby grow and go home fascinates me. I have a chance to make a difference that can affect a whole lifetime. I became a certified lactation consultant so I could help and encourage mothers of premature or underweight infants who can’t suckle at first to persist with breastfeeding. Breast milk is the best protection we know of for these delicate babies. I am passionate about helping moms give them the best possible start. Part of my job is to guide parents through the process of having a baby in the neonatal unit and to help them cope. I always tell parents that we are a team. I want them to communicate any concerns about their baby. They are their baby’s best advocates. I believe the insights they have may be the most valuable. A native of Italy, I trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Palermo before coming to the U.S., where I first completed three post-doctoral fellowships at USC, Harvard and Johns Hopkins, and then completed a full residency in plastic surgery at the Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland program. I graduated with an additional burn fellowship before continuing my education at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to focus on craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgery. There is nothing more daunting than seeing a child suffer or be in need and nothing more rewarding than caring for them and restoring their life and joy. When I was a child, a personal experience noting the sadness in a burned teenager made me want to help restoring happiness in people by treating their conditions and facial differences. For these reasons I decided to devote my life to the care of children. I am very passionate about the possibility to treat patients from head to toe, something that plastic surgery is uniquely poised to do. A special interest of mine is ear reconstruction, especially in microtia patients, for which I have developed a special device to aid in the cartilage cutting and carving process. I am also very interested in providing treatment to patients who have intractable migraines due to head concussions, a condition called occipital neuralgia, as I have seen how a simple surgery can truly free them from a debilitating condition. Cleft care and speech surgery are also two areas of focus of my practice, and in my free time I raise funds to help underserved areas abroad provide much needed cleft care. At work, I am keen in creating a cooperative workplace in which the focus is truly centered on excellence in patients’ care.My medical interests and expertise includes:Ear reconstructionMicrotia repairCauliflower ear treatmentProminent earsEar moldingOccipital neuralgiaBenign and malignant skin cancerOrthognathic surgeryCleft lip and cleft palate careSkull deformitiesHemifacial microsomiaCraniofacial syndromesVascular lesions and tumorsKeloid treatmentGeneral pediatric plastic surgery I consider every patient as if they were my own kids. I never take for granted the immense privilege parents give us in treating their child, and it is our duty to always perform at our best ability. I like to bring innovation in the operating room by finding novel solutions to old problems using the technologies that we are lucky to have to our disposal. I’ve wanted to care for people since I was very young. From the end of high school through medical school, I volunteered as a paramedic. During those 10 years, I saw how patients live and their struggles to care for sick children at home. This has helped me care for my patients because I understand the many challenges that their family may face. I chose pediatric surgery when I realized that I could be a voice for patients who have either a small voice or no voice at all. I’m passionate about pediatric surgical oncology and advocating for tumor detection in the early stages. Children’s complaints can be inarticulate and difficult to pin down, so they are sometimes labeled just a normal part of childhood. My job is to listen, recognize the issues, and speak up for them. When I joined the surgery department, I worked to establish an Orlando-based tumor board of Nemours specialists to help manage our cancer patients. As a member of the board, I represent the surgical oncology patients. Also, my laboratory is dedicated to the basic science study of neuroblastoma, which I plan to translate into clinical care. I have always been interested in medicine, as many of my family members work in the medical field. I started out in middle school as a volunteer in the NICU where my mom worked as a nurse. I loved to hold the babies, and from then on I knew I wanted to work in pediatrics. Working with kids is so much fun and there is never a dull moment! I’ve always worked with children, beginning in high school as a babysitter in my neighborhood. Before going to physician assistant school I worked with special needs children in the foster care system and as behavioral support staff in a preschool. Working with children brings me so much joy, and their little personalities never fail to brighten my day. I’m passionate about educating patients and families about orthopedics. Knowledge is power for parents who are dealing with a new diagnosis, whether it be a simple fracture or a more complex problem. In my free time I love to read, run and cook. I’m from a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania, but moved south to escape winter and work at Nemours. In all aspects of my life, I try to be as positive as possible. Patients can expect my enthusiasm for orthopaedics to be evident from the beginning of the visit. It truly is the happiest part of my day seeing each pediatric patient, and I hope that joy is obvious. I try to make a difference by taking time to educate both patients and their families and by patiently answering every question I can. What is the definition of Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly?

Hypoplasia of the tibia with polydactyly, also known as aplastic tibia with polydactyly, is a rare inherited (genetic) bone syndrome characterized by underdevelopment or incomplete development of the tibia bone (lower leg bone) and the presence of extra fingers or toes.

When should I see a Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Hypoplasia of the Tibia with Polydactyly doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more.
