Medicine runs in my family. Both of my parents were physicians (and role models) and my wife is a pediatrician and hospitalist at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. As a Nemours pediatric neurologist, I treat kids with a variety of medical problems involving the nervous system and brain. I enjoy educating families and making life a little easier for them. I’ve always enjoyed working with kids. I was a camp counselor when I was in college and medical school, and later a doctor at a camp for special needs kids. I like watching children grow and develop. Taking care of children is fun and rewarding. I feel strongly about helping children with neurological problems live up to their full potential. My passion is to educate kids and their parents, reassuring them that we’ll do whatever it takes to help make life as normal as possible. The children who come to me are often facing a serious condition that’s scary for the entire family. So more than making a difference medically, I always try to be compassionate and understand where they’re coming from, their anxieties, and concerns. I try to put myself in their place. Medicine seems to run in my family. My father trained as a physician in Iceland, and my childhood was split between the US and Reykjavik, Iceland. At first, I wanted to be a veterinarian, but once in medical school I had my heart set on Pediatrics from the start. I love kids. With eight children of my own I have realized that every child is unique and that there is no one right way to parent. Parents can be certain that I will be upfront with them regarding their child’s illness. I treat people the way I want to be treated when I step into a physician’s office with one of my kids. I try to listen more than I speak and learn from others at every opportunity. To me the treatment of a child is a collaboration between the child, his/her parents and the physician and team at Nemours. Together we will find the best solution, always. I’m proud to lead the pediatric neurology division at Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville, and have a focus on treating children with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. I’m also active in helping train new doctors in how to care for children with neurologic disorders through a fellowship program with Mayo Clinic Florida. My work is all about caring for children who have neurological disorders like epilepsy. I focus on making their lives – and their families’ lives – better, so they can enjoy being children and pursue their own dreams. I had the honor of helping a child with intractable epilepsy become seizure-free after complicated epilepsy surgery. Watching her play soccer for her school was a gift I’ll always remember. Our scientific knowledge is increasing all the time, and so is our ability to address complex neurological issues. I enjoy seeing children with neurological disorders smile and lead full lives. It’s a blessing to help care for them, and I find it personally rewarding. Dr. Sheth is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy. Dr. Gian Rossi is a pediatric neurologist at Nemours Children's Specialty Care, Lakeland. He helps children and teens with a wide range of neurological issues, including headaches, migraines and seizure disorders. Dr. Rossi is a published medical journal author, with scholarly articles on topics such as epilepsy and interruptions in circadian rhythms. I highly admire my father, a retired pediatric neurologist, who before his passing, allowed me to shadow him in clinic. Thereafter, in high school, I loved learning about the brain and its functioning in a psychology class. I majored in neuroscience in college and pursued a career in medicine. I enjoy working with children — they are fun, and you get to meet whole families sometimes, which is a privilege. I enjoy a balance of academic pursuits including teaching, research and staying up-to-date in pediatric neurology. Anything in the whole milieu of medical practice could spark an interest in me at any time, whether it be reading up on the latest potential neurologic complications of COVID-19, sports concussion and CTE, bioethics of gene therapy, complementary and alternative medicine therapies for neurologic symptoms/disorders — those are just a few topics I have delved into and enjoy talking about with anyone who is interested. Interests in my field include: Seizures Epilepsy Spina bifida  Developmental delays  Tourette syndrome  Headaches and migraines I try to take each individual patient I see, and get to the bottom of their disease process and this almost always involves mental, physical, and spiritual or emotional health and the complex interactions embedded there.  I am new to Lakeland, so I want to get to know our resources in town and team up with the community. What is the definition of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy?

Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent seizures (epilepsy). This condition begins in childhood or adolescence, usually between ages 12 and 18, and lasts into adulthood. The most common type of seizure in people with this condition is myoclonic seizures, which cause rapid, uncontrolled muscle jerks. People with this condition may also have generalized tonic-clonic seizures (also known as grand mal seizures), which cause muscle rigidity, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. Sometimes, affected individuals have absence seizures, which cause loss of consciousness for a short period that appears as a staring spell. Typically, people with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy develop the characteristic myoclonic seizures in adolescence, then develop generalized tonic-clonic seizures a few years later. Although seizures can happen at any time, they occur most commonly in the morning, shortly after awakening. Seizures can be triggered by a lack of sleep, extreme tiredness, stress, or alcohol consumption.

When should I see a Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor in Florida, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor in Florida, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctors in Florida, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctors in Florida, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor in Florida, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor in Florida, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctors in Florida, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
