Learn About Larynx Atresia

What is the definition of Larynx Atresia?
Laryngeal atresia, also known as congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS), is a very rare congenital (present at birth) condition in which the larynx (voice box) does not form properly. When the baby is born, the larynx remains closed, causing a complete upper airway obstruction.
What are the symptoms of Larynx Atresia?
Symptoms of laryngeal atresia occur at birth with a newborn being unable to cry or breathe.

What are the current treatments for Larynx Atresia?
If laryngeal atresia is discovered before birth, fetal surgery may be performed to open the larynx. Treatment for laryngeal atresia requires an emergency tracheostomy (hole in throat) at birth to allow the baby to breathe. Once the child is 4 years old, reconstructive surgery can be performed to create a permanent opening inside the trachea for the child to breathe normally. After reconstructive surgery for laryngeal atresia, voice therapy may be necessary.
