I see patients with memory disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. In almost every encounter, I feel like I see two patients: the person with the disease and the person taking care of the person with the disease. The caregiver often needs as much attention as the patient because they are under a lot of stress, so I offer helpful tips, advice, encouragement, and resources. These diseases don’t have cures, so I spend a lot of time talking with caregivers, diagnosing the disease, and helping families cope. There are some medicines we use for these diseases, but their effect is fairly limited, so we also try to treat side effects, such as depression or behavioral problems. It’s a partnership between the doctor, the patient, and the family trying to keep the patient as safe, happy, and healthy as possible. I am also involved in research projects and enjoy both seeing patients and studying their diseases in the lab. Dr. O'brien is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). His top areas of expertise are Cerebellar Degeneration, Alzheimer's Disease, Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), and Dementia.

As a behavioral neurologist, my primary goal during clinic visits is to determine if brain function changes in adults above the age of 50 are related to the aging process or are suggestive of a neurodegenerative disease requiring further care. Common neurodegenerative diseases that are evaluated in the clinic include Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, and Lewy body dementia. Another focus during clinic visit is to address all neurological, psychiatric, and medical factors which may impact brain health. It is a privilege and honor to understand a patient's life-long journey. This is an important part of the clinic visit since it allows me to identify various risk factors throughout one's life which may lead to the development of a neurodegenerative disorder. This is also one of the main reasons I chose to become a behavioral neurologist. Dr. Liu is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). His top areas of expertise are Cerebellar Degeneration, Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease (NIID), Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), and Primary Progressive Aphasia.

After 20 years of clinical and research experience using low carbohydrate, ketogenic diets, I am continually amazed at how health can be improved by just changing the food that someone eats. I use an approach that is simple and effective, and evidence-based. Medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, GERD, fatty liver, and PCOS, can all be improved or even reversed through food. I am specialized in internal Medicine and obesity medicine, and I am the author of the books End Your Carb Confusion, The New Atkins for a New You, Keto Clarity, and Cholesterol Clarity. I fell in love with neurology on day one of my clerkship year in medical school. To me, the opportunity to help patients and families through complex illnesses is simultaneously challenging and incredibly rewarding. I ultimately chose to sub-specialize in movement disorders because I enjoy being able to form long-term relationships with patients and families, and I'm optimistic that a disease-modifying therapy for Parkinson disease is within reach. I'm also a core faculty member of Duke's Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities, and the History of Medicine, where I develop programs to help students and trainees understand the patient's perspective, improving clinician resilience and mitigating burnout. Outside of work, I am an avid runner and cyclist, looking forward to exploring trails around the Triangle. My passion for treating movement disorders grew after seeing dramatic improvements in my patients' quality of life due to both medical and surgical treatments. My specialty involves a combination of procedures (botulinum toxin injections, deep brain stimulator placement, and programming) and medication adjustments. As I deal with chronic disease, I enjoy getting to know my patients and families long-term. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors and traveling to new places whenever I get the chance. I was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. During middle school, I spent my summer breaks volunteering in the nursing home where my mom worked, which inspired my interest in aging and geriatric medicine. Many years later, as a fellow in geriatric medicine at Duke Health, I returned to that same nursing home to care for its residents. Now, as a memory disorders specialist, geriatric medicine specialist, and physician-scientist, my goal is to provide the highest quality medical care to my patients, centered on their individual values and preferences, while working to develop interventions that maintain their cognition and quality of life. I enjoy building a collaborative relationship with my patients and their loved ones and working with them to develop a personalized, holistic approach to their memory care.
