Philosophy of care | Having been on the receiving end of multiple cancer diagnoses within my own family as I grew up, I strongly believe my patients and their families have the right to an honest discussion about their disease process. I personally make every effort to explain things in a simple yet detailed way, so patients understand their disease, goals of care and treatment plan. I want to be a trusted partner in helping them deal with their diagnosis, and make every effort to treat each patient as I would a family member. | Why I entered medicine | My family suffers from a genetic syndrome that predisposes them to developing cancer. Having grown up watching and helping most of the people I love deal with cancer, I decided to study medicine and do what I could to improve treatment and help others live their best possible lives with this disease. After medical school, I did basic science research at Johns Hopkins University, followed by residency and fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic and the University of Pittsburgh, all to become the best oncologist I could be. | Community involvement | I am involved in organizations and charities that improve the lives and treatment of cancer patients. I also help provide free specialized remote care and expert opinion to international patients in collaboration with their local health care providers. I enjoy community events to educate people on targeted therapies and their success in making cancer a chronic disease. I also enjoy giving talks on how oncology is evolving and how cancer today often means patients living full lives while being treated for their disease. | Personal interests | Outside of work, I love to spend time with my family and our two dogs. Together we enjoy cooking, traveling, trying new cuisines and being outdoors. I also enjoy hunting and fishing. What is the definition of Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL)?

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare subtype (6%) of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymphatic system (immune system). The lymphatic system produces lymphocyte cells (B-cells and T-cells) that normally help protect the body against infection and disease and is composed of lymph nodes and blood vessels, the thymus, spleen, tonsils and adenoids, and some areas of the intestines. In mantle cell lymphoma, which grows slowly, the B-cell lymphocytes that are situated in an area of the lymph node known as the mantle zone develop abnormalities and become cancerous, causing enlarged lymph nodes, and eventually spreading widely throughout the lymphatic system and other areas of the body, such as the skin, small intestine, liver, bone marrow, and other organs. Mantle cell carcinoma mainly occurs in males over the age of 50. Mantle cell lymphoma is categorized by the following stages: Stage I – This stage of mantle cell lymphoma indicates early disease where the cancer is in only one lymph node region, one organ, or one area outside of the lymph node region. Stage II – This stage of mantle cell lymphoma represents locally advanced disease in which the cancer has spread (metastasized) to more than one lymph node region above or below the diaphragm or has spread to one organ or one area outside of the lymph node region. Stage III – In this stage of mantle cell lymphoma, the cancer has spread (metastasized) to lymph node regions both above and below the diaphragm, and possibly the spleen or an organ or other area of the body. Stage IV – In this stage of mantle cell lymphoma, the cancer has spread (metastasized) widely throughout one or more organs or areas of the body and may or may not involve lymph nodes. Mantle cell lymphoma is further described by either A (no systemic symptoms) or B (significant systemic symptoms, such as persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, and drenching night sweats). An additional category E indicates that the cancer has spread (metastasized) to one organ outside of the lymphatic system.

When should I see a Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctors in Pennsylvania, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctors in Pennsylvania, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctors in Pennsylvania, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
