Overview
I have been a Professor of Plastic Surgery at Duke University and the University of Heidelberg, Germany since 2003. I am part-time affiliated with the Durham VA Medical Center, Section of Plastic Surgery serving our veterans and their families. I enjoy working in an academic environment and being able to cover a variety of plastic surgery cases. My main interest is plastic and reconstructive surgery, including repair of the abdomen and chest, breast, extremities, and face, head, and neck surgery, including microsurgery. My passion is to provide body contouring procedures for patients who have experienced significant weight loss, such as after gastric bypass surgery. When on call, I mainly treat hand upper extremity trauma-related injuries and other emergencies.

Clinical Research
Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.

I feel very blessed to have a profession that allows me to serve patients with both cancerous and non-cancerous diseases of the head and neck. As a head and neck surgeon, I carefully weigh the risks and benefits of treatment — working with our team to maximize the chance for cure while maintaining the highest quality of life. As a physician, my approach to patient care includes addressing one's physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual needs and well-being. My research endeavors strive to improve the care we provide to patients with head and neck cancers. I have had a research program in tumor immunotherapy. I am active in addressing global health needs, being involved with regular humanitarian mission trips throughout the world. I am also active in training the next generation of surgeons that are able to address and solve challenges in an ethical and virtuous way. I have, along with my colleagues, developed and instituted a virtue-based approach to residency training that will meet this need.
