Dr. Jeffery Campbell has been a pediatric neurosurgeon at Nemours for 20 years. His most notable work is with kids that have skeletal dysplasia and he acts as the neurosurgical component of our larger skeletal dysplasia program at Nemours. Most of his research has been in dwarfism and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Prior to Nemours, he worked in a private practice in Charleston, SC. When I was in medical school, I knew that I wanted to do something “brain-related.” During my fourth year, I did a neurology rotation and thoroughly enjoyed the immediate feedback of surgery. I split my residency time between pediatric and adult hospitals, but quickly realized that I loved working with kids. I was able to see kids get better and found the impact I had on them gratifying. My goal as a doctor is to have a long-term impact on someone’s life and treating kids was my path to do just that. I am passionate about providing the best possible care for all children. I enjoy being on the cutting edge of treating rare problems on the skeletal dysplasia spectrum and I take pride in people traveling to Nemours from all over the country to seek such treatment. I love that I can do things that can’t be done anywhere else. I believe that health care should be a team sport. I always advocate for team approaches, especially with complicated cases. I actively create multidisciplinary teams for many of my patients to give them the very best care. Dr. Campbell is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). His top areas of expertise are Achondroplasia, Increased Head Circumference, Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia, Bone Graft, and Adenoidectomy.

Dr. Ricki Carroll is a complex care and palliative care physician on the skeletal dysplasia and palliative care teams at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. Dr. Carroll works to provide a medical home and manage care for children with a wide array of skeletal dysplasias. Her background in palliative medicine allows her to focus on pain and symptom management needs for these children, teens and young adults. Dr. Carroll also leads the skeletal dysplasia consultative service, providing care for infants and children with skeletal dysplasias who are in the hospital. Additionally, drawing upon her Master’s in Bioethics, she is currently serving as co-Chair of the Nemours Ethics and Patients’ Rights Committee. It’s an honor and a privilege to care for families, children and teens with skeletal dysplasias and medically complex conditions. I aim to treat each child or teen as a whole, and not just treat the individual condition, as I feel spiritual and emotional needs are just as important as medical and physical ones. I try to intently listen to each child or teen and family when they are under my care, in hopes of understanding their story and their experience and, therefore, focusing goals of care to their individual needs. My medical interests include: Clinical management of infants with skeletal dysplasias, including OI, thanatophoric dysplasia, and collagen-II-opathies Emerging medical treatments for skeletal dysplasias The elucidation of the natural history of OI and skeletal dysplasias The role of biomarkers in all skeletal dysplasias Management of chronic pain in adolescents and young adults with skeletal dysplasias Complex medical conditions Palliative care I try to make a difference by focusing on each child or teen as if they are my one and only patient. I aim to provide a comforting environment for kids while they are in our care and always consider how to better manage symptoms and control any pain. I earned a master's degree in bioethics, and often call upon what I learned to help inform how I view the way the hospital and our teams deliver excellent care to children and teens. Dr. Carroll is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). My mother’s career as a nurse started my interest in medicine. I volunteered as a candy striper during high school and worked as a nursing assistant through college. After college and medical school in my home state of Ohio, I moved to Delaware for a Nemours residency that combined pediatrics with physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a way to help children with neuromuscular conditions reach the highest function that they can. I find my patients fun to work with, I love watching them grow, and I enjoy getting to know them and their families. The kids I treat inspire me with their resilience. I’m passionate about helping families of children with neuromuscular injuries or congenital issues become active, informed participants on their child’s care team. It takes a group effort to help an injured child return to prior function or to help a child with a chronic condition make the most of function they have. I make the patient and family’s goals my own. We may be trying to return a child to sports quickly after a concussion or helping a child with a chronic condition participate in meaningful activities. Rehab at Nemours means physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and others working together with the family. Teamwork is one of our strengths. Dr. Owens is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). Her top areas of expertise are Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), Developmental Dysphasia Familial, Mucopolysaccharidosis Type 1 (MPS I, Hurler Syndrome), and Hydranencephaly.

I am a first-generation daughter of a Holocaust survivor, and grew up in central New Jersey with two brothers — one has cerebral palsy. I’ve always been interested in science and education, and, with my mother as a role model, I am a strong advocate for inclusion, disability, and other issues. I relate well with kids in general and especially those who have disabilities. As a pediatric rehabilitation physician, I like to guide children’s recovery and rehab, help patients and their families set realistic expectations, and get them through the experience with all the information they’ll need. I’m a powerful advocate for the disabled, inspired by my mother’s steadfast commitment to help my brother succeed in his own life. I’m passionate about giving parents those same tools, educating children and families dealing with disabilities and injuries about the process of recovery. So they can be prepared. It’s important to give injured children and their families as much guidance and deep honesty as possible, so they can go through the experience knowing what to expect. This approach improves follow-through and success, and it’s also how I train residents. Dr. Haas is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). Her top areas of expertise are Concussion, Spastic Diplegia Infantile Type, Cerebral Palsy, and Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS).

Dr. Vandna Passi is a pediatric pulmonologist at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. She's an author of peer-reviewed medical journal articles, an invited presenter and an active researcher. I always wanted to work with children, and knew I wanted to be a pediatrician since I finished college. Then, in medical school, I spent a lot of my fourth year in pediatric subspecialties. Now, I get a lot of satisfaction seeing my patients over the long term — I can see their progress and development, and watch them as they grow. Children are such fun to work with and it can be simpler to approach their health issues than with adults. It's very fulfilling. One reason I chose pediatric pulmonology was because I liked the mix of being able to see and help children on an outpatient basis (helping kids on well and sick visits in our clinic) and also provide inpatient care to children who are acutely sick and admitted to the hospital. In my residency, I saw a lot of inner-city children. Many became seriously ill simply because their asthma wasn't being cared for, they hadn't been diagnosed properly, or they (and their families) hadn't been properly educated on how to manage their care. This was way more common than it should have been. I knew I wanted to help these kids, as well as all those who had other pulmonology issues, too. I'm passionate about working with patients and families to educate them on the conditions they’re dealing with, and how to prevent serious episodes and achieve the best possible quality of life. I'm also passionate about our hospital and staff continually setting best practices for treating children with pulmonology conditions and following those procedures routinely. I'm especially interested in these procedures being followed in our intensive care unit (ICU), as well as in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and outpatient clinic. A big part of what I do is educate families on what they need to know regarding their child's condition and health, including proper medication and care. I can't be with their child at all times, so it's really about empowering each family to help their child's quality of life. In children with asthma, for instance, I feel they should never be limited. Together with their family, I want to help them do whatever they want to do in life. Dr. Passi is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). Her top areas of expertise are Subglottic Stenosis, Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome, Thanatophoric Dysplasia, and Kozlowski Warren Fisher Syndrome.

I find inspiration in the motivation and optimism of my patients. Most kids I treat have complex medical needs or physical disabilities. I see my role as helpingeach child function to the best of his or her ability, removing barriers, and opening up opportunities for socialization and personal fulfillment. I want my patients to be able to enjoy the same ordinary and extraordinary life experiences as other kids. I had planned to become a general pediatrician until I fell in love with pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). My father, a PM&R doctor, encouraged me to rotate through his subspecialty as a medical school rotation. I never could have anticipated that this residency experience would lead me to change my career path. Now, as an attending physician in pediatric PM&R, I take every opportunity to introduce residents and medical students to the field and train them. Most arrive here intending to pursue a career working with adult patients. After spending two months training alongside my colleagues and me, many have changed their career paths to focus exclusively on caring for kids. I build relationships with my patients by showing an interest in their lives outside of their medical needs. I talk with them and ask questions about things that are important to them, like their favorite toys, TV shows or activities. I try to see them for the unique human beings they are and build a sense of trust. Building a strong relationship helps me to better understand my patients and what is most important to them. This allows me to give the right support and help each one work toward reaching his or her goals and dreams. Dr. Loren Berman is a pediatric general surgeon, an active researcher, and an author of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. She enjoys training the next generation of pediatric surgeons. Another role she enjoys here at Nemours is working on maintaining quality and safety to deliver the highest quality of care. Even when I was a child, I was curious about the human body, how it works and why it sometimes doesn’t. The more I learned, the more I realized I wanted to know how to fix things that go wrong. I came upon surgery to do that in a very hands-on fashion. I like working with children, and find them to be full of energy, incredibly resilient and inspiring as patients. I also appreciate the chance to form relationships with their parents. Family-centered medicine is much more than a buzzword. Outcomes improve when the family is part of the care team. I enjoy helping that happen. I value the relationships that I build with kids and parents, and I see most of them again in follow-ups. I love taking care of babies — and supporting their families through what can be an intense time in their lives. Unlike many adult surgeons, my job doesn’t end with surgery. I will often see a family many times for follow-up visits. I get to know them well. I feel involved for the long-term.I also enjoy watching a resident grow and hearing from them once they are practicing surgeons and training other surgeons. I find joy in seeing the impact when I develop a standardized process to improve care and can see the improvement. One of my primary roles as a surgeon is to be a teacher. I am committed not only to helping my patients and their families understand their disease process but also to training future surgeons. There are a few people who have inspired me and really stand out in my life as role models. I hope to serve the same function for future generations.
