Dr. William R. Lee

I specialize in gynecological radiation oncology but also treat patients with cancer of the breast, brain and central nervous system among others. I also have a special clinical interest in brachytherapy, when radiation is delivered directly to the target internally. Duke is a world leader in treating gynecological cancers with all forms of treatment. I have the privilege of collaborating with many other specialists in gynecologic surgery, chemotherapy and pathology. We have built a state of the art gynecologic cancer program in radiation therapy with a dedicated brachytherapy suite with built-in anesthesia monitoring, imaging to allow for the most complex and pinpoint treatments to treat tumors, while sparing all normal tissue. My mother was a radiation oncologist. Growing up, her dedication to her patients inspired me. She developed truly, caring relationships and touched the lives of so many people over the decades of her practice. My wife, my two children and I currently live in Durham and have been happy members of the Duke community since 2005. Outside of medicine, I spend as much time with them as I can. I graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1983 and served as a nuclear-trained officer on board two submarines before shifting to the Navy Medical Corps. Following medical school, I completed Diving Medical Officer training and served as head of diving research at the Naval Medical Research Center. After completing specialty training, I completed my 30+ year Navy career as Head, Radiation Oncology at Naval Medical Portsmouth Virginia. After returning to Duke, I served two years as Medical Director, Danville Center for Radiation Oncology, where I helped introduce technological advances into the clinical setting designed to improve treatment precision while minimizing treatment-related side effects. I joined Duke’s Wake County Radiation Oncology team in June 2017, and see patients in Raleigh and Cary. My clinical focus is on multi-disciplinary treatment of gynecologic, genitourinary, and lower gastrointestinal malignancies, with a focus on quality-of-life through minimizing treatment-related side effects. Board certified in radiation oncology, Matthew Manning, MD, balances his leadership and clinical responsibilities with clinical interest in prostate, bladder, brain and spine, melanoma and thoracic cancers.His research on high-tech therapies, including stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy, has helped elevate Cone Health’s cutting-edge clinical care at national meetings. In recent years, he has been published in the Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics and International Radiation Oncology Biology and Physics. In 2016, he received the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ Innovator Award. In collaboration with the Greensboro Health Disparities Collaborative, he has also co-authored studies to eliminate racial disparity in cancer care.Married with three children, he enjoys live music, going to the gym and traveling.
