Learn About Neonatal Severe Hyperparathyroidism

What is the definition of Neonatal Severe Hyperparathyroidism?
Neonatal severe primary hyperparathyroidism (NSHPT) is an inherited (genetic) condition characterized by severely high blood calcium levels at birth and major hyperparathyroidism (too much parathyroid hormone circulating in the blood). Parathyroid hormone is responsible for regulating calcium levels in the body.
What are the symptoms of Neonatal Severe Hyperparathyroidism?
Symptoms of neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism usually appear within the first few days after birth up until 6 months of age and may include severely high levels of blood calcium, bone mineral loss, bone deformities, fractures, respiratory distress, and failure to thrive. Newborn infants with neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism who are untreated may die.

What are the current treatments for Neonatal Severe Hyperparathyroidism?
Treatment of neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism should begin immediately and may include aggressive hydration and the use of medications, such as bisphosphonates (drugs to prevent bone loss) and calcimimetics to control high blood calcium levels, or dialysis. In the most severe patients with neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism, surgical removal of the parathyroid gland may be necessary (parathyroidectomy), after which the patient must take 1-alpha hydroxylated vitamin D for life.
