Duke Raleigh Hematology Oncology Clinic
Prior to arriving at Duke, I was faculty at UT Southwestern where I had a dual appointment at the North Texas VA for 10 years. During this time, I was one of the highest volume robotic VA surgeons treating veterans with urologic cancer in addition to my clinic practice at UTSW. I joined the Urology department at Duke in 2024. At Duke, I have continued my focus on urologic oncology, specifically prostate, bladder and kidney cancer. I have a particular interest in prostate cancer. I was one of the earliest adopters of a novel surgical technique termed the Retzius Sparing Prostatectomy, which allows for the earlier return urinary control. I have further adopted a novel technique for the treatment of localized prostate cancer known as irreversible electroporation (IRE). This technique is a form of focal therapy for carefully selected patients. The advantages of IRE include less urinary and sexual side effects than conventional prostate cancer treatments. In addition, my clinical expertise includes advanced robotic reconstruction of the upper urinary tract. These procedures involve using segments of bowel or buccal grafts (inner lining of the cheek) to reconstruct damaged ureters. Duke Cancer Center
I specialize in the care of patients with urologic cancers – mainly prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and testicular cancer. A cancer diagnosis is one of the scariest things that can happen to someone. For many of our patients, they don’t necessarily feel different or look different, but they are scared to death. The most important thing you can get from Duke is real understanding of your particular case and what your options are. Knowledge is so reassuring and empowering for patients, especially those recently diagnosed with cancer. When you’re first diagnosed, you have to put your trust in a care team, and that’s hard to do if you don’t already know them. As the largest cancer center in North Carolina, Duke has great reputation and experience, which helps many patients chose Duke for their care. But we grow and develop our trust with patients because of who we are as people and how much expertise and care we bring to each case. Dr. George is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in Nephrectomy. His top areas of expertise are Prostate Cancer, Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), Familial Prostate Cancer, Nephrectomy, and Orchiectomy.
Duke Cancer Center
I am a urologic oncologist who specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of tumors of the urinary tract in men and women. I employ minimally invasive techniques as much as possible in order to maximize quality of life and recovery from treatment. Examples include robotic surgical removal of the prostate, kidney tumors, and bladder with complete robotic reconstruction. I am passionate about researching tests and treatments that will help my patients achieve cure of their cancers. I believe this starts with understanding risk factors for cancer to guide screening and early detection of tumors. I enjoy listening to my patients and understanding their goals of care. I believe that cancer care is a team sport and the patient is the captain. I collaborate with other specialists to make a comprehensive treatment plan including but not limited to surgery. In my free time, I enjoy exploring the outdoors with my wife and two daughters. Dr. Abern is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in Nephrectomy. Duke Children's Health Center Liver Transplant Clinic
As an abdominal transplant surgeon, I perform transplants of the liver, kidney, pancreas and small bowels. I also do general abdominal procedures like hernia repairs. The most rewarding part of my job is the satisfaction and happiness I get when I see my patients’ faces after their transplant. I don’t want transplant patients to feel like we are putting them in a bubble. We expect them to live normal, happy lives, and enjoy the new organ once it’s given to them. Each patient comes to us with a unique challenge, but the best part of my job is the way the patient comes through obstacles and recovers. I decided to focus my training in abdominal transplant surgery after practicing general surgery in India and desiring a new challenge. I came to the U.S. to complete my surgical fellowship at Duke. Dr. Rege is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in Nephrectomy. Her top areas of expertise are Hernia, Umbilical Hernia, Chronic Antibody-Mediated Rejection, Kidney Transplant, and Liver Transplant.
