I specialize in treating mothers who have infectious diseases that might affect their baby during pregnancy or develop infections while pregnant. As a researcher, I conduct clinical trials with the goal of improving pregnancy outcomes. I am trained in obstetrics and gynecology and have done additional training in maternal-fetal medicine. I chose to pursue maternal-fetal medicine because it allows me to focus on treating a complex medical problem for a short period of time, when the patient is still relatively healthy. Most of the medical problems I treat have a positive outcome. Pregnancy is a joyous time for the patient and their family, and I enjoy sharing in that happiness. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our twins. I also enjoy traveling, cooking, running on trails, and watching and playing golf. Dr. Swamy is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Newborn Low Blood Sugar. Her top areas of expertise are Tetanus, Newborn Transient Tachypnea, Preeclampsia, and Newborn Low Blood Sugar.

I’m a pediatric infectious diseases specialist. The patients that I see are primarily very immune compromised children, so premature infants with severe infection, children with HIV, and children who had a stem cell transplant or chemotherapy and are at high risk for infection. My clinical care focuses on providing ideal therapy and ideal dosing to help prevent severe neurologic injury after infections in premature infants. With premature infants, they can’t tell you their symptoms and there’s no one perfect answer with dosage, so the medicine is really as much art as it is facts. And that’s really my favorite part of my job – figuring out the right dose for that patient and using that knowledge to help the next patient who comes into the unit. Outside of work, I participate in Olympic weightlifting, CrossFit, and baseball with my wife and four children. Dr. Benjamin is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Newborn Low Blood Sugar. I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics after observing a delivery during my first week of obstetrics training in medical school. The sheer excitement of every birth along with the knowledge of all of the possible complications faced by a mother was what attracted me to the field of maternal fetal medicine. Every day I feel privileged to be a part of this very personal experience for so many women. As a researcher in the areas of infectious diseases in pregnancy, I see it as my duty to help advance the care of women and their fetuses who may experience infectious complications. I hope to leave a mark on our field that leads to improved infectious disease outcomes for women and their children. I moved to the Chapel Hill area after many years of living and practicing in Rhode Island because of the outstanding group of physicians here. My family loves the area and getting out to explore all that North Carolina has to offer. Dr. Hughes is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Newborn Low Blood Sugar. My practice includes caring for children and adults with inherited conditions, such as inherited disorders of metabolism, genetic syndromes, mitochondrial disorders, inherited causes of growth failure or developmental delay, and conditions detected by newborn screening. My clinic works with the Pediatric Biochemical Genetics Laboratory to diagnose these conditions. We provide treatment for inherited disorders of metabolism. I work closely with the geneticists, neurologists, pediatricians, internists, and other providers at Duke University Medical Center to provide comprehensive care for my patients. I see patients with mitochondrial and lysosomal storage diseases, developmental delay, intellectual disability, chromosomal disorders, congenital defects, short stature, failure to thrive, and adult genetic disorders. I love the application of rapidly growing genetic knowledge to treat patients with a variety of medical problems that involve a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors, particularly since the Human Genome Project. I find it fascinating to use the massive power of sequencing technology and artificial intelligence/machine learning to predict phenotypes from genotypes with increasing clinical relevance to human health. What is the definition of Newborn Low Blood Sugar?

A low blood sugar level in newborn babies is also called neonatal hypoglycemia. It refers to low blood sugar (glucose) in the first few days after birth.

When should I see a Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor in North Carolina, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor in North Carolina, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctors in North Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctors in North Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor in North Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor in North Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctors in North Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Newborn Low Blood Sugar doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
