When someone is faced with a diagnosis of lung cancer, they may be going through surgery, radiation treatment, chemotherapy or enrolling in a clinical trial. It’s a very complicated process to understand what’s involved and what may happen next. It’s also hard to hear all the answers if you’re by yourself. We encourage our patients to come with family members and friends and loved ones and particularly to identify one or two main go-to people in terms of care-giving and support. That way we can engage them in the whole process. Just as we have a team taking care of the patient, the patient has a team, too. At Duke, we have the opportunity to engage patients in the very latest treatment approaches, whether it’s a new surgical technique, the latest radiation approach, or some novel chemotherapy, immunology, or targeted therapy, several of which we’ve been developing. Duke provides patients with a real opportunity that they may not have elsewhere. Dr. Crawford is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). His top areas of expertise are Febrile Neutropenia, Agranulocytosis, Lung Cancer, and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).

I specialize in the care of patients with urologic cancers – mainly prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and testicular cancer. A cancer diagnosis is one of the scariest things that can happen to someone. For many of our patients, they don’t necessarily feel different or look different, but they are scared to death. The most important thing you can get from Duke is real understanding of your particular case and what your options are. Knowledge is so reassuring and empowering for patients, especially those recently diagnosed with cancer. When you’re first diagnosed, you have to put your trust in a care team, and that’s hard to do if you don’t already know them. As the largest cancer center in North Carolina, Duke has great reputation and experience, which helps many patients chose Duke for their care. But we grow and develop our trust with patients because of who we are as people and how much expertise and care we bring to each case. Dr. George is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). His top areas of expertise are Prostate Cancer, Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), Familial Prostate Cancer, Nephrectomy, and Orchiectomy.

I am a part of the thoracic oncology program. I work with patients who have cancers of the lung, which includes non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and mesothelioma. My focus is on clinical care, clinical trials, and developing new therapies for these diseases. When I first meet with a patient, I want them to understand what their diagnosis is, because there are actually multiple diagnoses of lung cancer and each are treated differently. Then I discuss with a patient whether they are a candidate for therapies such as molecular therapy or immunotherapy, and make sure they have a clear understanding of the treatment plan. There are some very promising new therapies for these diseases and we are fortunate to have those available to patients here at Duke. That’s one of the unique things we offer as an academic medical center. Dr. Stinchcombe is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). His top areas of expertise are Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), Lung Cancer, Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC), EGFR Positive Lung Cancer, and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery.

My goals are to develop and provide treatments that prolong and improve quality of the lives of patients with aggressive prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancer. This work involves the direct care of patients in the clinic and clinical research involving the development of new therapies in clinical trials. I devote over half of my time to understanding how prostate cancer spreads and resists therapies, as well as methods of measuring this biology in patients, which may lead to improved therapies designed to block this process. Outside of work, I have a busy family life with three children, and a wife who is a Duke pediatrician. I enjoy playing soccer and hiking. What is the definition of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)?

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of malignancy (cancer) that affects the lungs, accounting for nearly 85% of lung cancers. While there are several types of non-small cell lung cancer, the three most common types are 1) adenocarcinoma, 2) squamous cell carcinoma, and 3) large cell carcinoma.  Adenocarcinoma occurs in the outer region of the lung and is the most common form of non-small cell lung cancer in the United States. Squamous cell carcinoma occurs in the center of the lung next to the bronchus (airway) and accounts for 25% of non-small cell cancers. Large cell carcinoma occurs in any part of the lung and accounts for 10% of non-small cell lung cancers. In addition to these three common types of non-small cell lung cancer, there are some less common types: pleomorphic (variable in size and shape), carcinoid tumor, salivary gland carcinoma, and unclassified carcinoma. Non-small lung cancer is classified in the following stages: Occult stage – Cancer is undetectable (hidden). Stage 0 – Carcinoma in situ, or the earliest stage at which non-small lung cancer can be detected. Stage I – Cancer is only in the lung with no spread. Stage II – Cancer is in the lung and close lymph nodes. Stage III – Cancer is in the lung and median (middle) chest lymph nodes, which is known as locally advanced lung cancer. This stage has two subtypes: 1) Stage IIIA – Cancer has only spread to same side chest lymph nodes; and 2) Stage IIIB – Cancer has spread to opposite side chest lymph nodes, or above the collarbone. Stage IV – Advanced lung cancer that has spread to both lungs, the fluid surrounding the lungs, or other organs or parts of the body.

When should I see a Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor near me?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor near me?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctors near me?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctors near me?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor near me?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor near me?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctors near me?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
