Overview
Dr. Loel Payne, a shoulder and knee specialist, has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA since 1995. Known as the "shoulder guy," he provides cutting-edge, compassionate care to his patients in both Hampton and Williamsburg, VA.
Born in North Carolina, Dr. Payne's interest in orthopaedics was sparked by witnessing sports injury treatments during his youth basketball career. He majored in biomedical engineering at Duke University, where he briefly played for the Blue Devils under Coach K. Dr. Payne then attended the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
His postgraduate training included an orthopaedic residency at Yale School of Medicine and a fellowship in shoulder surgery and sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. During his fellowship, he had the opportunity to work with the New York Mets.
Dr. Payne specializes in elbow, knee, and shoulder treatments. His approach combines the latest specialized care with the compassion he'd want for his own family. Nothing brings him more satisfaction than seeing patients overcome pain and resume their favorite activities.
Outside of work, Dr. Payne cherishes time with his family, including annual spring break trips. He and his wife Christine, whom he met at Yale, have three children currently in college.
With over two decades of experience, Dr. Payne continues to provide exceptional orthopaedic care, helping patients regain mobility and return to the activities they love.

The most rewarding aspects of his practice are fixing or reconstructing orthopedic problems, whether simple or very complex and restoring mobility in his patients so they can continue to live active and fulfilling lifestyles. Dr. Higgins lives with his wife and two sons in North Suffolk, VA. Outside work, he loves spending time with his family, collecting and restoring classic muscle cars, following professional and fantasy football, and lots of outdoor activities with his family.
