Overview
Michael P. Leathers, MD is a skilled orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician in Sacramento, California. While there, Dr. Leathers was invited to join Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the most prestigious honor society exclusive to only the top medical students in the country.Following graduation, Dr. Leathers went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then completed his fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder replacement at the University of California, San Francisco. This fellowship emphasized advanced reconstruction of knee ligaments, shoulder ligaments, tendons, and replacements for arthritis, as well as hip arthroscopy.In addition to attending the top orthopedic training programs in the country, Dr. Leathers is an accomplished presenter and has authored publications on multiple topics, including shoulder replacements, ACL reconstructions, pediatric fractures, and cartilage defects in the knee.Whether he's reconstructing a torn ACL in a professional football player or repairing a rotator cuff in a weekend tennis player, Dr. Leathers is motivated by the enthusiasm of the athletes in his care.I believe that as a physician my job is help educate and inform the patient so that he or she can make the best healthcare decision for themselves. While some conditions are amenable to surgery, most problems can be solved with a nonoperative or conservative approach and it is important to review these choices with the patient to help optimize his or her care. My goal and care philosophy centers around trying to get patients back to the activites they love to do.
