A native of Elizabethton, I graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1984 and completed my undergraduate studies at Southern Missionary College in 1988. After receiving my medical education from East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine and graduating in 1992, I completed my OB/GYN specialty training at the University of Tennessee while serving at Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. I was encouraged by strong family ties to the Tri-Cities area where my father, mother, brother and sister practiced in various fields of medicine. Because I value my close relationships with God and family, I returned home to start my own practice in 1996. Since that time, I have been blessed with three wonderful children. There have been many challenges, rewards and miracles as a parent that have made me stronger and – in some ways – made me the physician I am today. As each child I deliver is born, I pause to reflect on what lives the little one will impact. I provide care from adolescence to geriatrics, as well as those needing specialized care. I enjoy providing reproductive healthcare services and never take for granted my role in bringing new lives into the world. I specialize in performing minimally invasive surgical procedures. I have pursued this specialty by promoting the role of advanced laparoscopic techniques and expanded my traditional laparoscopic skills to include the provision of da Vinci® robotic surgery and single-port techniques, as well as pelvic support procedures. I was born and raised in Louisiana in a city just outside of New Orleans. Displaced by Hurricane Katrina, I moved to Monroe, Louisiana where I graduated with a degree in biology from the University of Louisiana. I then attended medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic medicine where I met my husband, Christian Sullivan. We then moved north to Michigan where I completed my OBGYN residency in Detroit. After completing residency we decided to return to his roots and relocated to the Tri-Cities area to raise our family and begin our careers. While practicing at Ballad OBGYN in Kingsport I met my nurse, Lisa Gibson, who will be joining me at State of Franklin OB/GYN. At work, she truly is my “better half” and a blessing to me and my practice. Lisa and I love our patients and are excited to be continuing to care for women in the Tri-Cities area. I have lived all up and down the East Coast. I was born in Maine, lived in Virginia, attended medical school in Miami, trained in Chicago and ended up in Tennessee because my family had moved here. I am married with two children, ages five and nine. This is a great community for our family. We are blessed with great friends, and the weather is a happy medium after living in the opposite extremes of Miami and Chicago. My husband and I are big race fans, so we love traveling to see races. After moving to this area in 1984 to practice, I still find myself in Kingsport after all these years. I met my wife here and am still close in proximity to my hometown of Prestonsburg, Kentucky. After living in big cities such as Tampa, Louisville, Denver and Houston, I discovered that I appreciate the small town atmosphere. I also enjoy the fact that people here are very similar in temperament to people where I grew up in eastern Kentucky. We had friends who were doctors in my hometown, and I always admired and wanted to emulate them. I traveled quite a bit for my medical training, attending medical school at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, completing an internship at the University of South Florida in Tampa and a residency at the University of Texas in Houston. I have always liked dealing with patients and people, and I try to listen and develop plans that people are comfortable with. Obstetrics is a tough time for women, and physicians need to listen. Our group is composed of physicians who get along and treat our patients well. We are sympathetic and aim for a good outcome during a woman’s pregnancy. We achieve this goal by being well-versed in the latest surgical techniques, which in turn allows for shorter hospital stays. If you’re an obstetrician, you have a celebration every day. That’s one of the reasons I chose this specialty when I was in medical school. I always had an interest in healing and biology, but with my field, it is fun even if you’re up in the middle of the night doing a delivery. When it comes to my patients, I think one of the most important things a physician can do is to listen to what they are saying. And, it’s also important to be able to explain what’s going on to patients at the level they can understand. Being able to communicate with each other is key. When I’m not welcoming new babies to the world, I love taking advantage of all the outdoor activities around here – I like hiking whitewater rafting and canoeing. I also like the climate. I’m from Long Island, N.Y., and my wife is from North Carolina, which is too hot for me. So we decided to settle here in Northeast Tennessee where the climate is great and it’s just a beautiful area. I was born in northern Virginia and spent my childhood growing up in close proximity to Washington, D.C. I then attended Virginia Tech, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology but – more importantly – I met my beautiful wife, Karen, to whom I have been married since 2002. Prior to attending medical school, I worked in a number of different health-related fields, including rehabilitation and business administration for a transplant center. Shortly after marriage, my wife and I left Virginia for the sunny state of Florida, where I attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University. While there, I received my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and developed a distinct interest in women’s healthcare. My first delivery as a medical student was my oldest daughter. I completed my residency training at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC – a residency training program that heavily emphasized outstanding patient care and advanced surgical training. My family continued to grow during my residency as my second daughter was born. I feel it is a privilege to care for women and their families throughout their life. I believe that OB/GYN provides special opportunities to closely care for young people as they build a family, advance through adulthood and make the transition into menopause. It is what defines the field as truly unique and a great specialty. I am providing care in both obstetrics and gynecology with a special interest in complex minimally invasive gynecological surgery and general obstetric care. My interests away from work include spending time with my family, attending church and enjoying all of the outdoor activities that East Tennessee offers.
