Overview
George Nanos, M.D., is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in conditions affecting the elbow, hand and wrist. As a former hand surgeon with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Nanos has extensive experience with traumatic injuries, including limb reconstruction and complex nerve and tendon injuries. He also treats patients with nontraumatic conditions such as carpal tunnel, arthritis, trigger finger and similar hand, wrist and elbow issues. Dr. Nanos obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by a hand surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Most recently, Dr. Nanos has served as a staff orthopaedic hand surgeon at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and as Navy orthopaedic surgery leader and consultant to the U.S. Navy surgeon general. During his military career, he completed a tour as a flight surgeon on the USS Constellation in 2001 and a tour as a forward surgical team commander and staff orthopaedic surgeon in Afghanistan in 2011. Dr. Nanos has received several medals, including two Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals. Dr. Nanos’ research interests include treatment of combat injuries and reconstruction after upper extremity amputation, including the use of prosthetics and targeted muscle reinnervation. During his 12 years at WVU Medicine, Dr. Lindsey created programs in musculoskeletal oncology and adult reconstruction as well as a multidisciplinary amputation clinic. He also led a musculoskeletal research laboratory into the national rankings for federal funding for orthopaedic surgery departments. His research focuses on improving treatment strategies for metastatic osteosarcoma and exploring human/machine interfaces for amputees. His work has been published in local, national and international basic science and clinical research journals. Dr. Lindsey has experience mentoring and training students at all levels from undergraduate and graduate students to postdoctoral positions. He won Press Ganey’s “Top Provider” award every year between 2013 and 2018. He also founded ICaPath, a biotech startup derived from his laboratory research that is currently working toward a first in-human clinical trial.
