Learn About Plaque Psoriasis

What is the definition of Plaque Psoriasis?
Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis. Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disorder that affects the growth rate of skin cells. Plaque psoriasis causes raised, reddened dry skin patches with silvery scales that appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, trunk and back.
What are the symptoms of Plaque Psoriasis?
Plaque psoriasis appears in cycles, with periods of remission followed by flare-ups that can last from weeks to months. Symptoms of plaque psoriasis during flare-ups can include reddened, dry skin patches covered in thick silvery scales, usually on the elbows, arms, knees, abdomen, and back, that may cause itching, burning, or bleeding. The sizes of the psoriasis plaques can range from small spots to covering large areas of the body. Nearly half of patients with psoriasis also have abnormal, thickened nails that are pitted or ridged. Psoriasis can also affect the mouth or genitals.
