Dr. Sanjaya K. Satapathy is the medical director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Institute, program director of Northwell's Transplant Hepatology Fellowship, and professor of medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.His path to medicine began in India, where he was inspired by his father an engineer with a passion for homeopathy to pursue a career in healthcare. He earned his medical degree from Veer Surendra Sai Medical College, followed by fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology in the early 2000s. During that time, he witnessed the profound need for liver transplantation in India, where access remained scarce. While presenting his research at a conference in the United States, Dr. Satapathy was drawn to the opportunities and possibilities for advancing transplantation in America. He decided to continue his career in the United States, completing additional residency and fellowship training before serving as a transplant hepatologist in Memphis. In 2019, he was recruited to Northwell. It was a dream to begin from zero and build a transplant program that could be a model not just for the area or the state, but for the country, says Dr. Satapathy. Within only a few years, we've been able to achieve that goal, because Northwell has all the elements and resources to be one of the best programs in the nation. The expertise we have is unparalleled, with a collaborative team that encompasses all levels of care. The program was founded just in time for a huge surge in demand for liver transplants in the area, he adds. Liver disease and other liver issues are on the rise, making the need for an extensive program crucial for those in the New York region. Part of the program's strength is innovation. For example, Northwell is utilizing an approach that allows donated organs to be safely preserved for a longer period of time, which means needed organs can travel longer distances even from as far away as Hawaii. Northwell is also running several clinical trials on transplant medications and operates a robust transplant hepatology fellowship program to train the next generation of doctors a program Dr. Satapathy launched.I'm passionate about this work, and particularly about my patients, he says. I see every patient as my family, and my focus is on what I can do next to help them. Dr. Satapathy is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Primary Biliary Cholangitis. His top areas of expertise are Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Hepatitis, Liver Transplant, and Endoscopy.

James Park, MD, is the co-director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Institute, and the chief of hepatology at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital. He joined Northwell after 14 years at NYU Langone Health, where he was the director of transplant hepatology. During his internal medicine residency at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Dr. Park developed a keen interest in hepatology, particularly within Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. I noticed a disproportionate number of Asians with late-stage liver diseases and liver cancer. They were often diagnosed late, some too late, he says. This realization led him to his calling. In 2022, Dr. Park established the Asian Liver Health Program at Northwell Health. Through outreach with local cultural organizations, free education and screenings, he works to dismantle the barriers to earlier diagnoses and treatment of liver cancer, cirrhosis and hepatitis B among the diverse and rapidly growing AAPI population. At the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation, care is coordinated with multilingual and multidisciplinary specialists. Having everyone in the same location streamlines the process for patients and maximizes communication between doctors. At the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation, we provide 360-degree care for each patient to ensure no stone is unturned in their immediate and ongoing treatment. Dr. Park also launched an Advanced Care Provider (ACP) fellowship in transplant hepatology to train the next generation of nurse practitioners and physician assistants. He is a strong believer in using ACPs to help address the shortage of providers in the field of hepatology. Educating ACPs and helping patients are privileges for which I am very grateful. Dr. Park is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Primary Biliary Cholangitis. His top areas of expertise are Hepatitis, Visceromegaly, Cirrhosis, and Jaundice.

What is the definition of Primary Biliary Cholangitis?

The bile ducts are tubes that move bile from the liver to the small intestine. Bile is a substance that helps with digestion. All of the bile ducts together are called the biliary tract.

When the bile ducts become swollen or inflamed, this blocks the flow of bile. These changes can lead to scarring of the liver called cirrhosis. This is called biliary cirrhosis. Advanced cirrhosis can lead to liver failure.

When should I see a Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor in New York, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor in New York, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctors in New York, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctors in New York, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor in New York, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor in New York, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctors in New York, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Primary Biliary Cholangitis doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
