Philosophy of care | I pride myself on taking care of people, not diseases or body parts. | People come with histories, belief systems, truths and misconceptions about their diagnoses based on their prior experiences and those of others. I try to understand and appreciate where they’re coming from and all aspects of their life when treating them. | A cancer diagnosis can be frightening, and I don’t take that lightly. Patients allow me into their lives at what may be the scariest time ever for them. I try to include the family in treatment because family is important and the diagnosis involves everybody, not just one person. | I’m a member of the breast cancer multidisciplinary consultation team. Together, we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | I was born and raised in Allentown, and Lehigh Valley Health Network has been part of my family as long as I can remember. | I grew up on the South Side of Allentown, not far from the LVH–Cedar Crest campus when it was a single building in what seemed the middle of a cornfield. My mother was treated for breast and lung cancer there. My father was treated for Legionnaire’s disease there. My brother was treated there for osteochondrosarcoma, a bone and cartilage cancer. I came from a family of blue-collar workers and nobody had been to college, but my family’s experience with cancer and disease inspired me to go to medical school and become a cancer surgeon. | Community involvement | I’m part of anything affiliated with breast cancer fundraising. I don’t belong to a lot of philanthropic organizations outside the hospital, but I participate in any activities the hospital sponsors, particularly when they’re related to breast cancer. | Personal interests | I collect shoes, and have for many years. Some are vintage or from notable designers who people might know from various TV shows, like Manolo Blahnik. I have a room in my home just for shoes, but they’re not strictly for display – I wear them every day. | As a woman in medicine who takes care of predominantly women, this is something fun I can share. In fact, I’ve become known for it, so new patients often look first at my feet to see what I’m wearing! I also enjoy Peloton, which is a type of stationary exercise bike with a large screen that allows you to connect with a community of users. It’s like a fitness Facebook except everybody doesn’t know all your business. My username is HellonHeelz. Dr. Alfonse is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia. Her top areas of expertise are Breast Cancer, Paget Disease of the Breast, Angiosarcoma, Inflammatory Breast Cancer, and Lymphadenectomy.

Philosophy of care | I believe in providing holistic care to patients. Too often in medicine, patients are seen as their disease and not as a whole person. I try my best to treat patients as full human beings, and always consider their backgrounds, culture, surroundings and the people in their lives who helped shape them. That’s a major reason why I went into family medicine. By listening and getting to know patients, I get a full sense of who they are. The relationship and trust we build is extremely meaningful and valuable to me, and allows me to provide the best care I can. | Why I entered medicine | I’ve always had a passion for helping others in need. When I was younger, I watched my mother go through so much pain and suffering due to a serious medical condition. She was fortunate to meet a group of excellent physicians and surgeons who not only changed her life but also changed my life and enabled me to dream of becoming something I never imagined: a doctor. After my mother regained her physical function, she was beyond grateful that she could provide for her two children again. She brought so much positive energy to our family. These physicians gave us hope and a second chance. I learned that a doctor can positively impact multiple lives at once and not just one person’s life. Now I try to do the same for others and share those special moments with them. | Community involvement | During my residency I volunteered in schools giving kids sports physicals. I found I loved working with children, and I especially enjoy caring for babies. Now, in addition to my regular practice, I elect to spend time doing rounds in the hospital nursery working with newborns. It is part of what I love about family medicine – the continuity of care. You start with babies, and then begin caring for the entire family. You really get to know each individual over the course of their lives. | Personal interests | My husband and I are huge foodies, and we love exploring different restaurants and trying new foods in the area. When I’m not sampling the local cuisine, I enjoy cooking Korean food at home, which I learned from my mom. I also love watching movies and TV shows after a long day of work – mostly dramas and thrillers. It’s my little reward, and a great way to unwind and relax. Philosophy of care | Listening is important. That's the most helpful to patients. You get the most insight into their personality. Communication is also important -- not only with the patient, but with the patient's family, and especially in the hospital or nursing home. Good communication goes a long way. I've been doing this for more than 10 years, and you build a relationship with your patients. I like to catch up, see how they're doing, ask about their family, vacations. | Why I entered medicine | My father was a doctor, and that had an impact on me when I was growing up. | Personal interests | My greatest passion in life is my family -- my wife and my two daughters. That's the most important thing to me. I spend a lot of time with the family, and I like to fish. We're big Eagles fans, and I have season tickets. Philosophy of care | I try to approach each patient interaction with an open mind and open ears. I listen to what patients are saying – and what they’re not saying – to get the complete story. My goal is to partner with patients and empower them to get involved in their care. | Why I entered medicine | Early on in school, I noticed I most enjoyed classes about health and the human body. As my medical training progressed, I discovered there’s so much more to being a physician than prescribing and diagnosing. It involves a unique mix of skills, including detective work and the ability to listen to and support patients. Practicing medicine is a very fulfilling career, ever-changing and always keeping me on my toes. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect deeply with patients and help them live healthier lives. | Community involvement | I enjoy staying involved with medical education, including working with medical students and internal medicine residents. I also stay active as a volunteer at my children's school when time allows. | Personal interests | I have two awesome children who continue to keep me busy. I love time with my family and am naturally in my happy place at home, reading a book or cooking with my husband. Dr. Auer is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia. Philosophy of care | Every patient is different and unique. I like to work with patients as a partner, sitting face to face and talking together. My role is to present various evidence-based treatment options, based on scientific studies. I always encourage patients to ask questions, and I’m there to make sure they understand everything. I’m even happy to write it all down so they can take the information home and think about it. I can’t decide the best treatment for patients by myself, but I can provide options and guidance to help them choose the best care. | Why I entered medicine | My father has diabetes. When I was 15 he started going into a diabetic coma several times a year. The first time it happened, I was at home with my parents where we lived in Taiwan. My mom was crying, so I quickly called my older sister, who is a family doctor in the United States, and asked her what to do. With her help I took his blood pressure, heart rate and checked his blood sugar. I found that I liked caring for my dad and started thinking I’d like to do that for other people someday. But I didn’t really plan to go to medical school until my dad asked one day if I wanted to try. I did, and the rest is history. I’m now helping patients get well and stay healthy, just like I once did for my dad. | Community involvement | I volunteer regularly at my father-in-law’s church in New Jersey. I participate in rummage sales and other fundraisers that support the church community. My other passion is helping animals. I’ve always loved them since I was a child, and my heart cries whenever I see an animal being mistreated. I even thought about becoming a veterinarian before I became a human doctor. I now have two cats that I adopted from a rescue shelter, and I also send regular donations to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). I help whenever I can. | Personal interests | I love spending time with my cats—they’re just like my son and daughter. My husband and I even have a small room in our house just for them, complete with a cat tree and toys. I also love traveling. When I was growing up, my mom took me abroad every vacation. I’ve been to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Southeast Asia and many other places. I particularly like trying local foods and learning new languages. I speak fluent Chinese and English, plus I know a little Japanese, Korean and Tagalog (spoken in the Philippines). I love to learn new things, and I think seeing many different places and experiencing new cultures has made me a more open person and a better doctor. Philosophy of care | I believe in treating patients as equals and friends. When a patient visits, I want to make them comfortable when they share what’s happening with their health. I don’t like to lecture people, but I believe it’s important to educate patients about preventative medicine. It’s important to catch small issues before they become big problems. It's very enjoyable and very rewarding, particularly when I see patients in the hospital – and in the office – to know that what I am doing has an impact. I also like to find out what's going on in their lives in addition to the medical aspects – with their grandchildren, where they are going on vacation – just meeting people every day and getting to know them. | Why I entered medicine | Growing up, I played football and basketball in school, and I was always interested in how the body works. But my mom says it goes back ever further than that. She says I talked about being a doctor from the time I was 4 years old. I can’t imagine doing anything else – it’s who I am. | Community involvement | I spend time at Muhlenberg teaching interns, residents and medical students. | Personal interests | I'm caring, passionate, loyal and intense - intense in a good way. I care a lot about everything I do and everything that goes on around me. I love my family, and I spend as much time with them as possible. My wife and I have three children. What is the definition of Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia?

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia is a digestive disorder in which the lymph vessels supplying the lining of the small intestine are enlarged. The cause of the condition is still unknown. The signs and symptoms include swelling of the legs and abdominal discomfort, loss of lymphatic fluid into the gastrointestinal tract, protein-losing enteropathy, too little albumin in the blood, reduced levels of antibodies, and immunodeficiency.

When should I see a Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia doctor near Easton, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia doctor near Easton, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia doctors near Easton, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia doctors near Easton, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia doctor near Easton, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Primary Intestinal Lymphangiectasia doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.
