Overview
George Nanos, M.D., is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in conditions affecting the elbow, hand and wrist. As a former hand surgeon with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Nanos has extensive experience with traumatic injuries, including limb reconstruction and complex nerve and tendon injuries. He also treats patients with nontraumatic conditions such as carpal tunnel, arthritis, trigger finger and similar hand, wrist and elbow issues. Dr. Nanos obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by a hand surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Most recently, Dr. Nanos has served as a staff orthopaedic hand surgeon at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and as Navy orthopaedic surgery leader and consultant to the U.S. Navy surgeon general. During his military career, he completed a tour as a flight surgeon on the USS Constellation in 2001 and a tour as a forward surgical team commander and staff orthopaedic surgeon in Afghanistan in 2011. Dr. Nanos has received several medals, including two Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals. Dr. Nanos’ research interests include treatment of combat injuries and reconstruction after upper extremity amputation, including the use of prosthetics and targeted muscle reinnervation. Dr. Richard W. Barth is an orthopaedic surgeon at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He is also an associate clinical professor of orthopaedics at George Washington University. He practices out of Washington Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at Sibley Memorial Hospital and in Chevy Chase, MD. Dr. Barth’s expertise is in hand, wrist, elbow and upper extremity surgery, as well as upper extremity sports injuries. Dr. Barth earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and his fellowship in hand surgery at the Indiana Hand Center. Dr. Barth is an accomplished surgeon and leader in orthopaedic surgery, serving as the former president, vice president and secretary/treasurer of the Washington Orthopaedic Society. He has also served on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and was named a Top MD by Consumers Checkbook. Dr. Barth was also a hand and wrist consultant for the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards. As a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery Carpal Tunnel Syndrome committee, Dr. Barth contributed to a publication focusing on evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon his return, he completed a one-year Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, MD.Dr. Shrout has been practicing in orthopaedic surgery since 1994, and retired from the U.S. Army in 2011 at the rank of Colonel. He has been in private practice in the Washington area since 2011, and has maintained his involvement in orthopaedic sports medicine by participating as a team physician for the D.C. United Men’s professional soccer team, and Head Team Physician for the D.C. United Women’s team in 2012. In 2013 he served as Head Team Physician for the inaugural season of the National Women’s Soccer League professional team, the Washington Spirit. He also has a particular interest in the treatment and prevention of sports related injuries of the upper extremity.
