
Overview
Austen D. Katz, MD, is an Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Spine Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He specializes in operative and nonoperative management of all spinal disorders. Dr. Katz provides comprehensive treatment for degenerative disc disease, back pain, spinal arthritis, and deformity. He operates across the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine and is highly experienced with motion-preservation surgery, including laminoplasty, disc replacement, and decompression. He is also highly experienced with large-scale fusion surgeries, including anterior column reconstruction and posterior fusion, as well as with minimally invasive surgeries, including microdiscectomy, MIS-TLIF, and lateral and anterior interbody fusions. Dr. Austen Katz also performs computer-assisted spine surgery, including robotics and navigation.
Dr. Katz received a world-class complex spinal surgery training at the University of California, San Francisco, gaining particular expertise in the treatment of advanced spinal deformities, complex revisions, spinal tumors, and infectious complications. His work at UCSF's esteemed spine fellowship program provided him with unparalleled exposure to all aspects of spine surgery.
Dr. Austen Katz earned a BA in Psychology and Legal Studies, graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University, and completed his premedical training at Columbia University's prestigious Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program. Dr. Katz earned his MD at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the university's inaugural chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Northwell Health/Zucker School of Medicine at Long Island Jewish Hospital, followed by fellowship training in complex and advanced spinal surgery at UCSF. Throughout his training, he has received numerous awards for patient care, academic excellence, research, and leadership.
Dr. Katz is deeply committed to advancing academic medicine. He has authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed publications focusing on patient outcomes and minimizing surgical complications using national spine surgery databases. He remains devoted to mentoring and educating residents at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
