Philosophy of care | My philosophy of care is that candor builds trust between you as the patient and me as your surgeon. Modern medicine is increasingly complex. You can only make good decisions for your own health if you understand the options, including frank discussions of the potential risks and benefits. When I meet with patients and their families, I employ a variety of methods to explain medical terminology and surgical procedures, such as sketching anatomy diagrams. You deserve to feel clear about your alternatives, secure in your decisions and confident in the skills of our entire health care team. | Why I entered medicine | Something can be a cliche and still be true: I wanted to help people. I come from a family of engineers, but I was drawn to the possibility of directly impacting individuals. I enjoy challenges and constantly learning new things. I like being face-to-face with patients and knowing my career is meaningful. It's also gratifying to be able to help my extended family navigate the health care system. | Community involvement | The causes that are most important to me are food insecurity, environmental protection and restoration, and voting rights. I also actively support my school-age children in their sports and other extracurricular community activities. | Personal interests | My current primary hobby is building bicycles and maintaining/modifying them for our family. We also enjoy hiking and playing board games together, and I am an adventurous eater and home cook. Dr. Shang is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS). Philosophy of care | I stress the importance of communication between my patients, their family members and me. Whether I am with a patient in the office or at the bedside, I spend as much time as is necessary to ensure all their questions are answered. It’s important that patients and families know what to expect before, during and after surgery. | Why I entered medicine | When I was growing up, I had the utmost respect for our family physician. When I was in high school, I joined a program that allowed students to rotate through different departments in a local hospital. It gave me the rare opportunity as a high school student to witness an open-heart procedure during the surgery rotation. That’s when surgery piqued my interest. I realized surgery was the area of medicine that allows people to see almost immediate symptom relief. That appealed to me. | Personal interests | I have three children. I enjoy spending my free time with them reading, playing and just watching them grow up. Dr. Garcia is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS). His top areas of expertise are Hernia, Umbilical Hernia, Gallbladder Disease, Gallbladder Removal, and Endoscopy.

Philosophy of care | I believe all patients have the right to understand and make their own health decisions. I will spend time explaining your situation and your treatment options in an easy-to-understand way. By the end of your appointment, you will understand your vascular disease and feel comfortable making health choices. I make recommendations but strongly believe in your right to make your own decisions. When you come to see me, you will get information, not a lecture. | Why I entered medicine | At age 6 I went to work with my mother, an operating room nurse, on Take Your Daughter to Work Day. I had the opportunity to watch an aneurysm repair and never looked back. I've spent my entire life working in hospitals, from candy striping to being a vascular surgeon today. I consider it a great privilege to help people in this way and I'm grateful to my mom for opening this door to me so early. | Community involvement | My family includes several rescue pets, and we are longtime supporters of the organizations that rescued them. Nowadays, we spend most of our time supporting our two young children in their activities. | Personal interests | Most nights after the kids are asleep, you can find me in my quilting studio. My family and I also enjoy biking, travel and museums. My husband is from Ireland, and we travel back with our kids to visit family as often as we can. Dr. Famularo is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS). Philosophy of care | I know what it's like sitting on the exam table and taking medicine as a patient. So my philosophy is to do my best to put you at ease and make sure all my patients understand their conditions and treatment plans. I have been humbled countless times by patients’ stories and morale. I plan to bring humility and respect to my practice every day and look forward to being part of your journey. | Why I entered medicine | I entered the profession because of a passion and appreciation for medical science. Medicine is an amazing and rewarding profession that allows physicians to not only study fascinating and complex disease processes, but also provides an opportunity to help people. It is an ever-evolving field that requires active engagement with both patients and current literature to offer the best care. I find great joy in helping people be the best they can be. | Community involvement | It’s important to be connected to the community you serve. I have helped high schools in the Lehigh Valley with training physicals, as also have helped underserved populations in free clinics downtown. During medical school I participated in medical mission trips abroad. | Personal interests | When not working I enjoy time with family and friends. I also enjoy making the most of the outdoors, including hiking, snowboarding, mountain biking and riding ATVs. I have recently started learning guitar and I also enjoy a good cup of coffee. Philosophy of care | My job is to save the lives of patients with aortic aneurysms, to prevent strokes in patients with carotid artery disease and to avert amputation in patients with impaired blood flow to their extremities. However, what I treasure in my job is the relationship with patients and their families, developed sometimes over years and sometimes quickly during a challenging time in their lives. I always remember that patients like you who seek out my expertise are people – with jobs, lives, hobbies, families and compelling personal stories. I enjoy hearing those stories and playing a role in caring for those individuals. | Why I entered medicine | Honestly, I wasn't very good at physics. After studying physics and engineering as an undergraduate at Haverford College and as a graduate student at the University of Virginia, I figured out somewhat serendipitously that I was good at surgery and enjoyed caring for patients. Vascular surgery is intellectually engrossing and technically challenging. | Community involvement | My wife Oksana and I support the YMCA, and three generations of Jacksons have attended a YMCA summer camp in Rhode Island. Because Oksana is of Ukrainian heritage, we support a number of humanitarian causes in that country. | Personal interests | My family and I enjoy hiking and camping (Indian Garden Campground at the Grand Canyon is my favorite campsite). My kids play a lot of soccer, and some baseball and softball, so I've become a student of those games. We're pretty dedicated Philadelphia Union fans. What is the definition of Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS)?

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a digestive condition that occurs when the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) is compressed between two arteries (the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery). This compression causes partial or complete blockage of the duodenum. Symptoms vary based on severity, but can be severely debilitating. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, fullness, nausea, vomiting, and/or weight loss. SMAS typically is due to loss of the mesenteric fat pad (fatty tissue that surrounds the superior mesenteric artery). The most common cause is significant weight loss caused by medical disorders, psychological disorders, or surgery. In younger patients, it most commonly occurs after corrective spinal surgery for scoliosis. Delays in diagnosis may result in significant complications.

When should I see a Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.
