I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with children, while also having the trust of parents to care for their children surgically. When I can care for a child and provide an answer to medical problems it is incredibly rewarding. I’m most passionate about participating in the multidisciplinary care of children with complex head and neck problems. Examples include my work as the medical director of the Cochlear Implant Team, co-director of the Minimally Invasive Skull Base Surgery program (a partnership with Thomas Jefferson University physicians) and co-lead surgeon for the surgical care of children with thyroid and parathyroid problems at Nemours. Dr. Richard Schmidt went to medical school at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He attended Thomas Jefferson University for his internship and residency in otolaryngology before being called to a pediatric fellowship here at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware. Having a family of his own, Dr. Schmidt empathizes with parents of children with health problems, so his care for a patient also includes caring for the family. After treating adults for seven years in a general otolaryngology practice, I began a fellowship in pediatrics. During this time, I found my calling and a stronger connection to my work by treating children. I'm passionate about providing the highest quality care to patients. I understand the unique challenges of treating children and believe that specialized care requires a specialized facility designed to handle those unique challenges. This is what led me to Nemours Children’s Hospital. I take my time with my patients and their families. I make a difference by personally being “in the moment” with a family and treating them like my own. I strive to emulate the values of my role model, my own childhood pediatrician. Dr. Schmidt is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Swimmer's Ear. His top areas of expertise are Enlarged Adenoids, Otitis, Ruptured Eardrum, Adenoidectomy, and Myringotomy.
Nemours Children's Health, Middletown
Gerard Kuhn, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician. He is an advocate for early literacy. He serves on the board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). I discovered during medical school that I enjoyed taking care of children most of all. I like being a part of helping families take care of their children’s health and watching them grow. I prefer the broad spectrum of pediatrics, which is why I went into primary care. I care about the quality of medical care children receive on a daily basis. I’m passionate about educating and coaching families in certain areas of childhood health that need attention. Childhood obesity is an example, where I help families understand the importance of healthy eating and exercise — and doing as both as a family.Another passion of mine would be helping families recognize the importance of early literacy. Again, this is a family activity. Children want to learn, and parents play a big part in that early learning by introducing books. I’m involved with Reach Out and Read. I’m involved with community service, like serving on the board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help lend some medical expertise. I’m also on the board of the Friends of the National Library of Medicine. Dr. Kuhn is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Swimmer's Ear. His top areas of expertise are Food Allergy, Obesity in Children, Common Cold, and Developmental Dysphasia Familial.

Anna Kolano, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician. She is an advocate for early literacy and reading to children. She feels privileged to care for children as they grow. I always knew I wanted to be a doctor, but I didn’t know what kind of doctor I wanted to become. I enjoyed my pediatrics rotation so much that choosing to be a pediatrician was ultimately an easy decision. I’m passionate about newborn care. There’s so much education that needs to happen for new parents. It’s such a special time for the family, especially if it’s a first child. I feel privileged that parents have chosen me to be a part of that experience. Parents don’t often have the family support that they might have had 50 years ago, so they really rely on their family doctor for information.I’m privileged to do what I do; I love my job every day. I have been with Nemours since 1996. Some of my former patients, now all grown up, are choosing me as their children’s pediatrician. It’s incredible! I’ve made such an impact on these people as children that they’re willing to trust their babies to me. I love that I can provide continuity of care within families. I’m an advocate for early literacy education and reading to your children. I’m part of the Reach Out and Read program in our office. Also, I do my best to support a new mother in her efforts to breastfeed. Dr. Kolano is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Swimmer's Ear. Her top areas of expertise are Food Allergy, Obesity in Children, Otitis, and Viral Pharyngitis.
Nemours Children's Health, Saint Francis
I grew up in a small town in Argentina where everybody knows everybody. I trained at a hospital in Buenos Aires, was elected chief resident, and then received further training in neonatology and Emergency Medicine before moving to Wilmington with my wife, Dr. Petrini. I really enjoyed the time I spent training in medical school and I enjoyed the pediatric part the most. So I decided to take that path and have never regretted it. Kids have the fire inside, and bounce back quickly. I’m passionate about helping people in general, especially children. I advocate for immunizations, which are one of the wonders of medicine, along with educating kids about obesity, asthma and the importance of complying with medication regimens. These are very serious issues in many populations. My other big passion is creating a medical home for my patient families. The medical home concept combines teamwork and information technology to improve patient care, reduce health care costs, and improve patients’ experiences. The goal is to foster an ongoing partnership between patients and their health care providers. I did mission work with a group that spent a month helping people in the Andes mountain range in South America. It was a beautiful experience, sharing habits and culture, and it taught me to put myself in other people’s shoes and see things from their perspective. Dr. Vranic is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Swimmer's Ear. His top areas of expertise are Obesity in Children, Food Allergy, Common Cold, and Ethmoiditis.
