Dr. Milton James
Overview
I am an ophthalmologist trained in vitreoretinal eye disease. I treat a wide variety of diseases to include medical conditions, such as diabetic-related eye disease and age-related macular degeneration. However, my surgical training allows the management of retinal attachment and macular holes. I was introduced to the field of medicine at an early age by my mother who was a nurse. My father was an entrepreneur and owner of a small business, so I realized the importance of hard work and commitment. In retrospect, I believe that my ability to pursue and achieve my professional goals is a direct result of their drive and sincere work ethic. During my free time, you'll find me running along the greenway preparing for my next race or cycling with my family.

I’m a retina specialist who takes care of patients who have problems with the back of the eye. When a patient comes to see me, I like getting to know them and their history, so that I can tailor their treatment. My patients come from a variety of different backgrounds, so I find that I often learn as much from them as they do from me. Everybody has a different story and I very much like to learn about the patients to whom I provide care. Duke is a great place at which to work and from which to seek treatment because it’s a very collaborative institution. Everyone works together to do what’s best for the patient. Outside of work, I like to spend as much time as possible with my family. I also enjoy cooking, playing sports and watching sports. I use the latest diagnostic and therapeutic methods along with a collaborative team effort with colleagues across Duke Eye Center and the Duke Rheumatology and Immunology division to develop the optimum treatment plans for patients with uveitis.
