Amir A. Schricker, MD, is a board-certified cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders. He uses specialized medications and procedures to care for patients with all types of irregular heart rhythms (or arrhythmias), including atrial fibrillation (AFib), atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia (VTach or VT), premature ventricular contractions (PVC), and all supraventricular tachycardias (SVT) such as atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT), Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome (WPW), and atrial tachycardia (ATach or AT).Dr. Schricker has a special interest in atrial fibrillation treatment, including performing ablation, preventing strokes using warfarin/Coumadin and the newer blood thinning medications, and implanting left atrial appendage (LAA) closure devices such as Watchman and LARIAT. He also has expertise using focal impulse rotor modulation (FIRM) ablation, a specialized catheter ablation procedure that individualizes ablation treatment to each patient.Dr. Schricker also has extensive experience implanting all cardiac rhythm devices, including pacemakers, defibrillators, biventricular devices (cardiac resynchronization therapy [CRT]), and implantable loop recorders. As an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Schricker instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research focuses on investigating mechanisms of atrial fibrillation. He has co-authored many abstracts and journal articles, and his work has appeared in Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, and Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, among others.Dr. Schricker completed fellowships in cardiology and clinical cardiac electrophysiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. He earned his medical degree from University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. Dr. Schricker holds a master's degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. Cardiac Electrophysiology And Arrhythmia Service
Dr. Melvin Scheinman, one of the pioneers of cardiac electrophysiology (the study of the heart's electrical activity), was the first to perform catheter ablation on humans. His team was instrumental in developing radiofrequency energy applications for cardiac arrhythmias. Scheinman and his colleagues also developed techniques for better understanding the mechanisms and treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders in patients with inappropriate sinus tachycardia – a condition in which resting heart rate is abnormally high – and to cure patients with automatic junctional tachycardia, in which one area of the heart is leading to a too-fast beat. Scheinman currently directs the cardiac genetic arrhythmia program, which is devoted to discovering new genes related to heart rhythm disorders. Scheinman grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and earned an undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated first in his class. His medical education included Albert Einstein College of Medicine, residency training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and cardiology training at UCSF Medical Center. Dr. Scheinman is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation. His top areas of expertise are Arrhythmias, Heart Block, Ventricular Tachycardia, Cardiac Ablation, and Pacemaker Implantation.
Cardiac Electrophysiology And Arrhythmia Service
Dr. Thomas A. Dewland is a cardiologist with particular expertise in electrophysiology, the study of the heart's electrical activity. He cares for patients with arrhythmias (heart rhythm problems) in both the clinic and the hospital. Among other treatments, he performs catheter ablation (in which a flexible tube called a catheter is threaded through a blood vessel to reach the heart and destroy the tissue causing an arrhythmia), pacemaker implantation, implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement and left atrial appendage closure (sealing the heart sac where blood clots form to help prevent stroke in patients with the heart rate irregularity called atrial fibrillation). In research, Dewland focuses on atrial fibrillation epidemiology (the study of which populations are affected by certain diseases and why). His goal is to identify ways to prevent atrial fibrillation before it occurs. Dewland earned his medical degree at the Yale School of Medicine. At UCSF, he completed a residency in internal medicine, a fellowship in cardiology and a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology, as well as the Advanced Training in Clinical Research Certificate Program. Outside of work, Dewland enjoys spending time with his wife – a pediatrician at UCSF – and their two children. Dr. Dewland is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation. His top areas of expertise are Atrial Fibrillation, Arrhythmias, Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT), Cardiac Ablation, and Pacemaker Implantation.
Cardiac Electrophysiology And Arrhythmia Service
Dr. Daniel P. Morin is a cardiologist who specializes in electrophysiology (studying the electrical activity that controls the heart's rhythm). He cares for patients with a range of heart rhythm conditions, including those requiring devices, such as pacemakers and defibrillators, and those that benefit from advanced ablation procedures, such as atrial fibrillation and other abnormally fast rhythms. He directs UCSF's cardiac electrophysiology laboratory. In his research, Morin is interested in a wide variety of heart conditions and treatments. He has investigated predictive factors in sudden cardiac arrest, new applications for cardiac resynchronization therapy (a treatment for heart failure), how the heart's ability to contract changes after an ablation procedure, and how to improve electrical cardioversion (shocking the heart to correct an irregular heartbeat). His research has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal and Heart Rhythm (the journal of the Heart Rhythm Society). Morin earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and his Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Tufts Medical Center. At New York – Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, he completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease and a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology. In addition to caring for patients, Morin is dedicated to promoting cardiological research. He is deputy editor of Annals of Internal Medicine: Clinical Cases, and was the first online editor of Heart Rhythm, serving for five years. In addition, he is associate editor of several other medical journals and serves on the Heart Rhythm Society's board of trustees. Dr. Morin is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation. His top areas of expertise are Atrial Fibrillation, Arrhythmias, Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT), Cardiac Ablation, and Pacemaker Implantation.
