Overview
Dr. Amir Khan earned his medical degree at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. Dr. Khan, who has been in practice since 1989, is board certified in neonatal-perinatal medicine. A professor of pediatrics and director of the Division of Neonatology at McGovern Medical School, Dr. Khan is a recognized researcher and author. His primary interests are lung inflammation in meconium aspiration syndrome; gene-environment interactions and development of childhood asthma; GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and chronic lung disease; ventilatory strategies in neonatal lung diseases; and the use of ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) in neonatal and pediatric respiratory failure. As medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, Dr. Khan plays a key role in providing high-quality neonatal care that has led to shorter hospital stays and decreased infections and complications. He received Memorial Hermann’s Dr. James “Red” Duke, Jr., Physician Leadership Award in 2018, an award that honors a physician who combines strong leadership skills with strong business acumen and works to find innovative ways to improve the health of the people served by the Memorial Hermann Health System.
